How high was the snow? I’m hoping to have a 4Runner replacement soon.

We left the plowed road at 6,400 and there was about 6” of snow on the ground. Lake was at 7,400 and there was about 10”

I find the snow depth map to be fairly accurate.

    The usual
We had a very FAFO moment over the weekend. There is a huge thread in NorCall 4x4 Rescue FB. Feeling very stupid, so let's treat this as a PSA.

Quick story time, we left UTC and made it to Lake McKinstry around dinner time (5ish). Most the trail was already cut, and the part we plowed was easy going. We had small issues right by the lake, nothing witches and kinetic rope couldn't solve. We also had 2 rigs show up at 11pm, they only struggled by the lake. We went to sleep after 2am. not knowing any better.

I woke up at 5am on Saturday and my RTT collapsed on me with the amount of snow that fell. Between midnight and 5am we got 1-1.5 feet of snow and it was going strong. We packed camp as fast as we could and started pushing out. We made it less then a quarter mile on Saturday, friends super built 4runner on 38s was getting high centered on the snow within few feet of driving. We used satellite text to have someone post on Facebook recovery group, and the first group tried and gave up that night.

Sunday the weather eased up, zero wind, clear blue sky. The only thing that worked was digging the road and having the biggest rig go back and forth flattening it. We knew the next storm was coming Monday morning, so we decided that this was the day we need to get out. Rescue group started really early, one of the guys with red Jeep said he woke up at 3am. We were digging snow starting at like 6am and going until 10:30pm when we finally made contact with the rescue group. We maybe moved maybe three quarters of a mile with our effort. Even with connecting with the rescue rigs the whole rescue still took until 6am, when we got on Icehouse road. The rescue guys put in 22 hours of rescue time, can't be more thankful.

We were well provisioned, but only 5ish gallons of extra gas. By plowing with the 4runner on 38s and a V8, we went thru that gas very quick, he had to get few gallons from the rescue group to make it to the nearest gas station. Gramin texting was great, the new iPhone satellite texts were great. Extra socks, extra boots, extra gloves, and anything that can dry things--we were all soaked the first day. Buddy heater was awesome. Full size shovels, and even snow shoes (one of us went to scout to see if the can reach the group).

It was dumb for us to camp during the storm, and I never want to shovel this much ever again. But hope this helps someone out there, I've snow camped every year since 2018... I guess when nothing goes wrong for a long time we loose perspective. We could have lost all of our rigs if it wasn't for the amazing work from the rescue group (which wasn't guaranteed, they could have given up at any point).

A good heads up! Nature ain't no joke.

Makes me feel better about putting away a cooler half full of uneaten food and duffle full of unworn clothes after most trips!
