Interesting... When I was signing the contract I asked if there was going to be a penalty if I make payoff early and the finance guy at the dealership said NO.
So whether that applied to them or just me is not my problem because I asked up front (had no idea they could get penalized). Besides, I had the cash and I didn't get that cash by paying intrest on car loans or feeling like I owed anyone a dime they didn't earn.

Toyota Motor Credit isn’t going to charge anyone an early payoff penalty ….in fact, i'd be shocked if they financed any kind of dealer shenanigans.

I'm not sure what you mean by "unless you know something you're not sharing with us," since it's not possible for me to know what each person reading this thread knows or doesn't know, but I'll add some more details and maybe that will help.

It's no secret that large corporations consist of a hierarchy of business units under the parent, and each of those business units consist of cost centers, and each cost center has its own performance metrics that it and its people are judged by, as well as metrics for its performance relative to the business unit it's under, and in turn for the performance of the business unit relative to the parent. Except when viewed as a stock holder, it's not a flat structure. Each piece of the hierarchy will usually have some part of its performance judged by the levels above it, but the majority of its performance is what it does relative to the next level up (that's all those people really have much direct control over).

So a dealership has "cost centers" (they may use a different word but the same idea) for new car sales, used car sales, service, parts, financing, etc. Each one of those individually wants to maximize its financial performance, since the raises and bonuses of the people are tied to that.

With all that in mind, back to the case of the new car sales and financing cost centers at a given dealership. This is an overly simplistic explanation but the new car sales group gets a "finders fee" from financing, once the loan is closed. It's contingent on the buyer paying finance charges for x months of the loan (but that's not specified in the loan documents you see). If the buyer pays the loan off early, the finance group claws back a pro-rated portion of the finders fee. These are usually called charge-backs. This same sort of thing also happens for extended warranties, tire/wheel warranties, extra accessories, and whatever else a buyer may initially agree to but later cancels or backs out of it.

This isn't anything new and isn't a secret, although it's probably true that most people aren't aware of it. There is vast information on charge-backs and car deals on the internet. It not necessarily shenanigans, it's just how the process of cancelled or early payoff works, in order to be fair to the internal cost centers who thought they made x dollars but ended up not making it. It can become shenanigans when the dealer threatens to charge you (the buyer) for the charge-backs, or other form of retribution. And that was the original point I was making.

I just thought your post was a little too Glib. As if you might be a dealer, or someone with intimate knowledge of the business.

The main reason for my post was to point out that TMC is only going to do a no strings attached simple interest loan on the purchase of a new Tacoma.

If you are getting a better price because you are financing through Toyota Financial Services, then I would honor the deal for at least six months. However, in my experience the deal numbers don’t change depending on funding.

In fact, I never discuss the method of payment until I have a sales price in writing.

Some of this depends on your age, credit rating, the way you approached the purchase, etc.

Agree wholeheartedly with this statement! I've bought and sold over 100+ different vehicles in my years on this earth (I get bored easily with cars and used to drive over 35k miles/year so I'd go through them pretty quickly), and learned right up front with my first new truck purchase while still in college to only negotiate price - never payments, or even discuss how I'm paying for the vehicle. Got taken by that dealership in college when they asked how much I could afford per month... realized in the middle of my Finance 201 class about 3 weeks later that I got a terrible deal, and had to go and claw back what I could from that mistake.

Now I only deal on price with the sales team - period. If the sales person or their sales manager come out with the '4 box' chart, I get up to leave if they don't talk price only. Everything else comes afterwards and separate. Once price has been locked down, then we can talk about financing / rates. If the dealer can offer a lower rate than my local Credit Union through their corporate sponsor, then I'll take it and they get their kick back. If they can't beat my CU, then I use my financing instead and they can work to beat it if they want the loan.

The best feeling is was the one time I wrote them a check for the vehicle, but I've only been financially able (and cool enough) to do that once :)

Certain manufacturers have rebates tied to financing with their captive lender; so not disclosing your method of payment will make getting the actual price difficult. “What method of payment gets me the most attractive price” or “how do you want me to pay” gives the dealer the illusion that you’re in it for their profit.

I got my 2024 yesterday. Took 11-12 weeks from Mexico. Says the build date was 25 October and got here in Mass. Thursday. We 'ordered' it middle of September. I traded a 2017 TRD Offroad for this long bed Sport in Underground. It is nice. I am not a fan of the huge screen or all the crap included with the $8000 package but that's life. It seems to me I got a lot for the trade in so its hard to know exactly what I paid item by item but the dealers have never changed in my 45 years of buying new vehicles. The sales guy is a decent guy, actually a good guy. But the other a-holes? The finance guy with all the adders? We got rid of the $500 nitrogen tires at the start. But then the finance guy? I patiently listened to the $5000 of adders and (even my wife agreed) I nicely declined and suggested, politely, we save each other's time and get on with the paperwork. I told him I will say it once. I am not buying anything extra. So them he says but you must want the 7 year paint protection plan? Its 7 years, and 'only' $1000 .... huh? OK, I told you once we are done, so let's stop wasting time. Then he says, well, I can offer you this plan for $134.... EVERYONE takes this deal. Its one dollar over cost. Then I got clear, do you want me to leave now or are you going to get on with it. Then he starts saying the boss says he has to ask 5 times....he makes his money on these sales, its how he buys dog food, takes care of his wife......he's in a contest to sell the most packages. Finally he got the message and acting real pissy got the sales paperwork done. As we were leaving my wife tells him my husband does not like people touching his cars so he takes care of them himself. At that point, the dip dunk says, well, we cleaned it and preped it for you so I guess our guys already touched it. Thought my wife was gonna smack him. Anyway, the truck seems pretty nice and I hope its as solid as my two prior Taco's. Not sure this tale has much value but I suppose its kind of standard these days.

Congrats! Yea, the finance guys can be quite annoying. I just say “No thank you” a lot.

75555639527__03351AD8-9DEC-40FB-9F1E-F24D8D6EA15E.jpg I’m interested in this 2024 Trd or 4x4 Lb automatic with the 14” display, Trd 6ft upgrade and 400w power supply. Trading in a 22 Trd or 4x4 which I paid new $39k. I’m trying to get another $3-4k out of the deal. 2.99%/24 mo with no early payoff penalty. Thoughts?

they’ve taken $4,500 off there isn’t another $4,000 in discounts on this. Unless your trade is worth $2,000 over what you paid 2 years ago.

I’m looking to get another grand on my truck which only has 6900 miles and some of the fluff which they are asking 2k for tint and polish/coat. I also found this Colorado which the dealer is advertising for $43k for comparison. Not very familiar with Chevy but it does appear like a good deal. IMG_2821.png

I missed the highlighted $2,000 appearance package (not sure how haha). So really it’s $2,500 off MSRP because there’s no value in that package. I think you can do $2,500 better on price and $500-1,000 on trade. dealers in certain regions are doing $5k off unless it’s something unique like MT Premium package.

Exactly my thoughts… if it works out I’ll put my truck back to stock. Grill, catback, wheels, backflip, all weather bed and mats, kicker speakers, seat covers…will be for sale.

This reads like a skit from “I think you should leave now” I can imagine Tim Robinson being the finance guy.

I don't see you getting another $3-4K on this deal. The average discount is about 9%, which is where you're at, and the dealer is giving you $37K for your 22 OR that cost you 39K. Maybe they'll work with you on the price of the appearance & protection package. Just my .02.

Most of the cost of the dealer add-ons comes out of the discount and is not factored into the percentage off. The discount is ~2500 instead of 4500 after taking out 2000 for the dealer add-ons.
