For a place to stay, then drive down route 1. I’m trying to remember what other options might be up there.

Anyone have any ideas around here? Upstate NY near Fort Drum.

    upload_2024-1-3_9-27-27.png

This little peninsula might be a good spot.

We could kip up closer to the finger lakes, or elsewhere, but head this way for the eclipse? Good Westerly view, the eclipse is closer to 3-3:30 I think.

Can't guarantee we could all fit but this would be a real close camping spot

Any consensus on a meet up place? I really can't do Maine and it is going to go over where I go fishing at lake Champlain. Party and campout at Eammons @BadDNA place?

The only consensus I have is "not Maine" - as of a couple days ago. Looking to go toward upstate NY and the area.

    upload_2024-1-24_8-26-53.png

I'm happy to do St. Albans on the VT side, or Plattsburgh on the NY side. VT is half hour closer to me, in theory.

Edit - Eclipse is around 3:30-4PM in that area, so somewhere with an open view west might be better. That lends itself to VT side.

OK so I go fishing every year at Lake Champlain on South Hero or Grand island, Basically where the red dot is. Where I put the red arrow is a Causeway that is about a mile long with views in all directions. Here is a google Map pin and first person view.

    https://www.google.com/maps/@44.629...pitch=0&thumbfov=100!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

Now the only issue is that camping up there does not start until after Labor day. And I mean anywhere. If we can find a place to camp on Sunday, and then meet up at that point, it might be the best bet. What does the rest say?

I'm down for this (3 hour drive for me at this point lol), my only concern with being this close to populous areas are people and space. Campgrounds and hotels in the area are already booked up and have been so it's gonna be a madhouse

Here are a list of camping places in the area but I am not sure any of them are open as of April 1st. There is a sand bar and beach area right at the end of the causeway, I might be able to call the state police and see if we can get permission to camp there on the beach......it would be windy and cold though.

    Close

But yeah, that far up it doesn't start until May. Mud season is a thing even for hiking trails, a lot of gates open June 1.

Jared....You're a genius. I've BEEN ON that causeway.....

This is from Google but you get the idea.

    upload_2024-1-24_10-0-11.png

I think we'd have to start early in the day because we'd need to find a place to kip up all of the vehicles, and then get out there in time. Lunch in town around 11-12, then head out, would be my thought. It'll be a bit of a walk (or bike ride), but it's definitely doable.

My only concerns are (a) weather and (b) busy. I think that the causeway is huge, I think we'll be able to be there without much of a concern. I can't foresee the whole thing filling up.

    https://www.helloburlingtonvt.com/events/solar-eclipse-events/

This page has "popular viewing locations"
    https://www.helloburlingtonvt.com/blog/post/burlington-the-spot-for-the-solar-eclipse/

I don't see anything about it being closed for (a) "official" viewing area, IE tickets only or (b) winter.

All in favor of the viewing location? From there we can start to coordinate (a) Sunday night overnight (or not, to be fair, it's doable as a day trip for whoever wants to) (b) lunch (and dinner?) for Sunday (c) where to stash the trucks/getting out to the causeway for Monday.

I live about 1.5 hours from the bike causeway. Google Molly's Falls Pond in Marshfield and you're practically on my doorstep.

I wonder if Hill Farmstead is doing something for it already. Maybe we could just meet up there

My cursor is over (about) Hill Farmstead, the green circle is the causeway

If I'm going that far up I'd prefer to be closer to the blue line.

    Anyone got a boat?

It's good. We should 100% hit it this summer somehow.

Now that's only about a half hour from me. Oddly, I've only been once since moving up here, it's easy enough to find on draught all over the place.
