I doubt if Toyota wants to build an electric trucks that they will loose money on. Paying more money for an ice Tacoma don't sound like a good idea to me either. Toyota would hve to raise the price of conventional trucks if they offere an electric option.

Betting California will pull a Real ID and delay this at least 5 years. But pretty sure making all gas vehicles illegal was never a play. Just new sales. Those 1-4 gen Tacomas are going to sell for bank come the conversion.

If I had a dollar every time I heard the media use the words "Battery Breakthrough" I could afford a new 2024 Tacoma.

That's good news when you hear that. Means less use of mined materials, lighter weight, faster charge times.

You missed my point entirely. It means there are a ton of empty promises out there. Toyota has been hyping their solid-state batteries since 2014 yet they are fighting every jurisdictional governing body to stop the implementation of EV mandates. Hollow words.

Well they are just like every other corporation in the world. But they did show their batteries in their corporate video. So they are real.

It's not real unless it's in an actual automobile and being tested by the general public/automotive journalists. Any car company can show curated images from a lab and say "See, it's a Tesla killer!". If this technology was what Toyota says it is Toyota would be crushing the EV market. Toyota is about the least established of all legacy OEMs when it comes to EVs. In fact the Japanese government has been having emergency meetings with Toyota because they are worried how far behind they are when it comes to EVs. Japan is an automotive powerhouse. China is catching up though, especially with EVs and the Japanese government is worried.

I love Toyota (obviously) but they are really sucking now when it comes to electric cars. The BZ4X is a huge joke and no one is buying it.

They could be in an actual automobile and being tested. BUt they can't 'crush' the EV market with these because they aren't in production yet. But Toyota has been making hybrid EV's longer than any car company. JUst not full BEV's. They do need to step up but when they do they tend to r and d for a long time. That's what makes them one of the top mfg's in the world. China will be the dominant EV car maker I'm thinking, very soon, over Tesla. Time will tell.

Toyota has had a SSB prototype for at least 2 years. I am wondering on how much they have improved on it in that time.

The major downside of Toyota producing more BEV. The price of ICE Toyotas will go up. Toyota can't sell BEV with out losing profit on them.

If that hybrid costs more it's worse for the environment. Who ever is spending more on a hybrid or EV, has to pull that cost from the economy which means other people have to use more resources putting that money back into the economy. There's a finite supply of wealth available. Low tech, low cost vehicles are better for the environment.

EV's are cheaper to make. Of course ICE will be more expensive.

Toyota's aren't trucks, they don't run on diesel.

EV is more expensive if you compare the cost of an EV to a gas version of the same vehicle. If EV is cheaper all the manufacturers missed that memo.

Could be cheaper to make if you don't add the R&D and ramp up cost for production. There have been several articles in the last few months about Ford losing 40 to 60K per EV it build. Right now Ford is paying for all the new factories it has built and building for EVs. Tesla went through the same thing and has really only been profitable in the last few years.

Yes they could be cheaper to make, but right now they are not for the reasons you describe.

Tesla has cut prices to stay competitive at the cost of profits.

If the EV sector is on the constant crusade to improve battery technology, range, and charge times. Where is the break even point and cost savings pased on to the consumer?
