2024 Test Drives - Pefectly ok with my 23’

I have a 2018 with 25k miles, nice Bilstein lits, SEMA wheels, 285, TRD exhaust, heated leather, nav, everything I want. I was getting ready to buy a 2023 Pro but just could not give up my 18 Longbed Sport. I think the way it drives, looks and performs with the KDMAX tune I will keep mine. Hell its paid for, perfect showroom condition, garaged kept. So my Cousin bought the MGM Pro. Its nice and all but not nice enough for me to have traded up. The 24 is not in my sights but maybe one day. My Wife says I don't need my Tacoma because all I do is roll the 99 4Runner. Hell I didn't need a turn key perfect 67 SS/RS Camaro big block either.

I like the looks of the 2024. The torque curve looks good for a truck. But I have a 2023 MT and am very happy with it. I don't race it. Its a daily driver for me - around town, camping, trips to the dump. The torque is fine and I run it between 2 and 3k rpm basically everywhere. What I was interested in was the mpg. I knew not to expect EPA numbers when I bought. my Tacoma - and I wasn't surprised. But I might have been interested in the '24 if I could consistently get over 20mpg. Well the way I drive, the new ones would scarcely be an improvement over what I have. I will pass.

 

I mostly like what Toyota has done, but that interior is a no go for me. Specifically the center console. It is too tall and wide, and will feel cramped, just like the 19 ranger i had.
I really like the console layout in my 22 taco. Would love to swap the trans into my truck though. If i end up keeping my truck forever, I will probably build it into a 2wd long travel pre runner style with a swapped in stroker 5.0. But I will be too old or dead by the time I wear this one out.

Personally, I've got nothing non-complimentary to say about the Gen-4 Tacoma but I do have questions. How much of the drivetrain is made in China and if I do my part with maintenance, do I have a chance to drive a $40 to $50 (which was yesterdays $30 to $40) thousand dollar vehicle the first 200K+ miles virtually trouble free. If I decide to sell it and buy new before 200K miles, will it be a need or a want.

The ability to engineering and manufacture has branded Reliability into Toyota. It wasn't done with words. It was done with deeds.

I'll be the first to admit, I've never owned nor maintained a Toyota Hybrid and I've got real concerns about using the words reliability and Made in China in the same sentence. These concerns, however, are nothing a continued commitment to excellence backed up with a built-in warranty "with teeth" can't fix. I'm not looking for guarantees; just probabilities based on brand and facts.

What I will continue to watch for will not be what Toyota says, it will be what they do. It must be done with deeds. For now, I'm going to continue to admire my Tacoma of Toyota's storied past until the dust settles.

 

In a strange way, despite us criticizing their formula, Toyota builds, what it believes to be, the right truck. In the end we throw down our hard earned cash because the truck is so dependable. They didn’t do it overnight. It was part of their ‘Kaizen’ philosophy: continuous improvement. In a way, I hope they don’t listen to us too much and keep building a great truck.

Personally, I think and hope the 2024 is going to be great. And I love the stuff they’re doing to the new truck. I just think the 3rd gen is the one of their best looking trucks since the mid-90s. I don’t like overly aggressive or expressive styling…the 2024 crosses into that territory just a bit too much for me.

 

Strange, I was able to climb a long hill with about 500 pounds in the back of my truck, towing ~4K pounds fighting head winds in 3rd gear at like 3300 RPMs with zero issues. About a quarter throttle application.

I’m on 33s, lifted 2”, which, front stump bumper, sliders and roof rack. Truck with me and almost full tank of gas is 5300#

By the way, I drove 500 miles through mountain passes and not once my tach went over 4K even when climbing the steepest and longest hills.

I agree. The 3.5 has plenty of power. Driving a MT you can tell exactly where the powers at and how much. I think a lot of the confusion is because of the AT's and it's gear ratios. Blaming a lack of power on the 3.5 is the easiest thing to do.

 

You might be right. Although, I drove 2018 and 2019 AT TRD off-road and noticed none of “TW” complaints.

 

Never buy the first year of a new vehicle…I’ll be hanging onto my 2020 OR until it dies…
