Agreed, big advancements in battery chemistry will greatly help both power density and charging rates. As for now, I think I could deal with 10% worse roadtripping performance than a gas car.

Yeh, no doubt the speed is nice but I'd rather have extra battery range in place of a fast 0-60.

I wish gas stations did this.... people out here leave their car at the pump then go into the shop for 10min. Drives me nuts when the pumps are packed.

Speed is what's selling right now... but when a Hyundai IONIQ 5 can accelerate faster than a Porsche Macan, it doesn't really matter anymore lol

Sure - but what's the average EV lifetime? 5 years? 6 years? How many years of running an EV does it take to offset the massive environmental impact the manufacturing process has? I see the articles where they say it'll be offset over the course of it's "lifespan" but I've yet to see one that actually delves into the numbers year by year - including the average energy costs & the impact those have as well. On top of that any EV's that fail before their expected lifespan would not pay off, whereas a ICE that fails is just another car off the road.

We know what the complete environmental impact of ICE vehicles are and I don't think we can say the same with EV's.

Check out the second video, really dives into the year by year impacts. And we do have a lot of data on batteries over the years. While the early Nissan Leafs had no battery cooling and now they're pretty much dead, battery systems have really advanced and now companies are comfortable offering 10 year battery warranties stretching into the 100ks of miles.

Mythbusters just tested a MachE to see how heat and AC impact the battery. The AC was quite efficient and had little impact but the heater used quite a bit of energy, surprisingly charging your phone also had a draw on the battery too.

    Interesting........

But still not enough to convince me to make a change, especially not on a 4x4.

I've driven a Rivian at a test event and it was damn near a religious experience... but they told me that my R1S won't be here until "First half of 2023"

R1S has my ears perked. R1T just seems off to me. Too expensive and nice to treat like a truck. And the price difference is so small.

Yes, and as a former diesel owner for over a decade I can tell you when they do it in a gasser in front of one of the few pumps you can use its really annoying. the station doesn't even need to be busy and you could have two selfish people parked in front of the only diesel pumps inside shopping.

Meh, I've driven my dad's Tesla and while it's quite the experience and fast, I could never justify the cost to get one. Throw in the range issues and the other things addressed in this thread like 4x4 capability, frame rigidity and I can't see this being practical for anyone who actually uses their truck.

Plus there's no manual EV's so I'm out on that alone.

Range issues will get better, I get 300 miles range in my Tacoma today... so there isn't much of a gap to bridge. 4x4 capability is pretty impressive on the Rivian for a stock vehicle, frame is extremely rigid to protect the batteries so I don't know the exact concern here, and as far as "real truck use goes" yeah the Rivian has a super short bed, but it's not like the F-150 Lightning or another truck can't do work.

Earlier in the thread it was brought up that the batteries are probably going to be tied in the frame. When doing serious off-roading the frame can flex a little and there is concern that may damage the batteries.

That I'm sure has been addressed by the engineers at RIVIAN, Ford, Chevy, and Toyota.

I'd be curious to see how. Also wondering if they have a full length skid plate to protect everything.

Yeah, tesla is building structural frame batteries... I don't think those would be good off road.

Rivian has a full length skid plate underneath (metal skid is optional in the Off Road Package) and the Ford battery is isolated completely from the frame.

The Rivian R1T is a unibody construction so it doesn't need to flex like a ladder frame truck. It also utilizes a 'skateboard' style battery assembly and, yes, there is lots of protection underneath the battery packs.
Not that we're going to convince any of the naysayers on here to even remotely become interested in a BEV 4WD, but for those interested in educating themselves, take a few minutes and watch the plethora of videos clearly demonstrating the R1T's prowess as an off-road capable BEV. Their Colorado media event and Motortrend's cross USA via off-road was especially impressive!

Respectfully, for those that want a manual, 4WD, 6.5' bed, looks like a normal pickup, charges in 5 minutes, tows 12,000 lbs, hauls 2000 lbs and will go for 600 miles per charge, maybe take a break from threads like this so the rest of us can spend this time discussing today's advancements in BEV technology.

    Thanks
