There are Tacomas with well over 400,000 miles with minimal maintenance that cost 20,000 dollars new back 20 years ago. Tacomas today that will be bought for 20-25,000 that will last the same amount of time.

The cost of replacing a battery before 200k miles is way more expensive than replacing a transmission which have an average life span the same as the engine. A new EV truck would cost well into the 50+ thousands and will be "disposable" before 200k miles because of a dying battery. No thanks.

You're right, it has harmed, but doesn't continue to harm as long as it's done correctly. Mistakes are made. The proper way of mining lithium is ensured to destroy the surrounding life, waters, and land.

Drilling for oil on land and off shore has been clean for many years and it boosts US economy.

Personally I want a PHEV Tacoma ideally with ~50 miles of EV range. Never have to use gas for day to day life and can still explore the world without concerns. I don’t think PHEVs are better for someone with a commuter car but I think they add a lot of versatility to a truck. Especially if it’s like the F150 hybrid where you can use the battery as a generator for camping or even power your house in emergencies.

Reading through this thread again your post reminded me of a car I once saw. I used to mow for a pretty nice used car dealership and it had a car sort of what you were describing. It was called the Fisker Karma and it had a solar panel roof. I believe the solar panels charged the hybrid portion of the car. Sadly they didnt sell well in the US. It was a cool looking car though.

I can recall seeing several Fisker's that had the drivetrain swapped out for an LS.

More info here on that. The solar panel on that was just a gimmick.

Solar roof charging on electric vehicles is really just a gimmick. Sure it will technically charge the battery but the amount of power input is extremely low compared to the output required to drive. If my math is right and a Tesla model 3 had 400w worth of panels and was parked outside on a sunny day it would collect in around 1.5kwh of energy which would give it an added range of 6 miles.

I heard, pg&e is helping to push through a tax if you have solar panels and a battery at your residence, here in sunny california.

That's a bummer. It was great looking car and it sold pretty quick when it was on the lot. After reading the article and looking at the roof again I can definitely see why it didnt work well. Hopefully someday soon some company can make this concept work better.

Ahh... CA... where they charge you for being efficient. Solar panels? You pay them. Rain water? You pay them.

It seems every year CA has those (rolling blackouts)? I can only imagine how it would be if everyone had an EV there. Hell, they can't keep up with their electric demand now.

It's difficult to ration the sun. It's been supplying energy for thousands, millions or billions of years, depending on what you believe.
If electricity becomes too expensive, do what you can to use less of it from your local utility company.

Solar panels plus battery packs along with natural gas or propane generators go a long way.

With natural gas or propane stove tops and ovens, clothes dryers, fireplaces, BBQ, water heaters and furnaces, you're using little electricity around the Pacific Northwest.

Lights and a few electric motors and small appliances around the house here.
