Well considering it's a 2013 model, it is about 9 years and it had about 80000 miles on it total according to his Instagram. And about 22k to repair it.

Well considering the total miles on his tesla was about 80k according to his instagram I'd say that kinda sucks to have to repair it at about 22k. If that's the case I won't be buying a fully ev for a long time.

He replaced the original batteries with off brand batteries for more power/range and then they failed. He wanted to switch back to Tesla batteries and was quoted 22k. That's the story i read somewhere. So considering the average car in the USA costs $40k+ I'd say 22K is a bargain.

I did see an interesting point on Tony's Garage. How do you retrofit charging stations in big apartment complexes or hi rise apartments? Definitely some challenges. Those challenges are an opportunity.

It would be interesting to analyze the cost savings (electricity to charge his EV vs. the cost of fossil fuel over that 10 year period). The break even analysis would be interesting to see. He very well may still be in the green even spending $22k on replacement batteries when you consider fuel costs, oil costs, transmission & differential fluid costs + filters (if applicable). Of course, prices change over time per kWh of electricity and per liter of fuel so accurate historical data would be needed but I'd be willing to bet the owner still ended up in the green as far as total cost of ownership if he were to compare a similarly performing, high end, fossil fueled sports car.

    okay:

400,000 miles, divided by 18 miles per gallon = 22,2222.2 gallons of #87 gasoline used. @ $3.25 per gal (I honestly have no clue how much flyover states or other sad places pay, but in CA it's almost $5 a gallon) = $72,222 in fuel costs for that 400k mile unicorn Tacoma (which in imaginary land will never need even one major engine, trans or t case repair). We also need to factor in oil change and maintenance. I'll just be super gracious and say $2,000 for 400,000 miles of driving. Which brings the total for a 400,000 mile Tacoma (including truck cost of $20k as you say) to....

    $94,222

    yikes .

how do you factor in not dealing with a slow turtle POS vehicle? Or not being able to chill out and let the car drive you in traffic? or resolving an insurance claim with multiple camera angles? Or getting the car warm before you get in when it's super cold out (with out filling your garage with death fumes)? Or making the car pull out of the parking spot because someone parked too close ? It will literally ruin your perception of what driving should feel like if you drive in an EV then go back to our v6 slush box trucks.

Seriously, from 1-1.5 mph i can’t tell the difference. But past that and it feels like the taco has the emergency break on lol

One thing that feels some what the same is how when you let off the gas in the taco , it feels like the EV with full regen breaks on . The mud tires do a great job of simulating “one foot driving” … too bad it doesn’t regenerate gasoline back in my tank like the tesla :(

There will probably be only a 25% "additional" load or demand on the entire grid. That's a lot but not insane.

I drive 50 miles ish a day (more than the average) and need about ~13kwhrs of juice. That's akin to running a big AC unit for 2-3 hours a day, or a big microwave for 10 hours non-stop lol.

One thing I will say about EV charging and cost (what a lot of people don’t realize) is you are definitely paying a premium for time of charge , not necessary the actual energy. So if i go to a rip off tesla super charger , and it’s one of the 100kw+ ones it will be 20bucks or more for a 80% fast charge. That’s not due to the energy I soaked up , but the time it took . You pay for speed if you need it. If you use your home 220v or even 110v the cost is way way cheaper . If you use the non tesla public chargers it’s 1/3 the cost , but a little slower. I keep the mobile charge in my trunk (with a normal 110v plug) and will mooch off my friends places when I visit them lol. apps now show all the chargers around you and which ones are free (usually at malls , chain restaurants or casinos)

Not really hard to run electricity to parking spots. Up north it is the norm that every parking spot has a plug in to keep the engine warmed up. A standard 120v plug will charge a Tesla about 40 miles if plugged in for 12 hours which is enough for most commutes.

I don't enjoy the trend of making EVs look like the future. Can't you just put an electric motor in a normal looking car?
