    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

It's all pretty much fire roads. I don't see why a stock 4wd Tacoma couldn't make it. If you run in to problems, I have a winch, tow straps, shovel, traction boards, axe, MREs, a flashlight... well, you get the picture.

Question for the 2nd Genners with camper shells. @Hookgrip is trying to decide on leaf springs. Which would you guys suggest between the the 96R (Heavy Duty) and the 95R (Regular Duty).

I'm telling him the 96R because I believe that's pretty much what everyone runs that has a shell and has a load out for camping... But I don't have a second gen, or a shell.

Since I missed out on the camping shenanigans last weekend, I'm down for a drive in the woods.

The stock truck is plenty capable and having good spotters makes it easy. If it's fire roads with the occasional obstacle, you should be fine.

He'd probably be ok with the standards but once you start loading out for camping or hauling anything besides just the shell the Heavy duties are going to be nice.

Figure out which shell first. They can very from 200-500 pounds empty. That will tell you what he would need.

So, i went with the HDs for future proofing. The ride is fine, not rough in my opinion. I have a shell and typically no other heavy gear when im driving around town (axe/shovel and my typical automotive/emergency supplies are always there of course).

I do think the mediums would have been just fine for unloaded w/ shell, as the heavys with only a shell has lifted the rear alot and i find myself wanting more lift up front. Whereas the mediums would have probably settled/sagged down to 2.5" of lift and kept my truck more level/less rake.

But i do typically bring alotta gear as i like to camp for weeks at a time. Plus i wanted to future proof for a RTT setup or drifter (or even FWC). So i went with the heavy duty pack and have been happy with it. Handled my recent road trip loaded to the roof with gear, took a few unintentional jumps like a champ aswell lol

I think if 90% of your driving is unloaded, then the mediums would probably be the way to go. They say "330lbs of constant weight" and i know most shells are like 150-200lbs. You can always add a leaf down the road if you start adding more weight or notice excessive sagging when you load up for camping but i bet theyd be fine.

I should also add that I plan on doing a rear high clearance bumper with the swing out. So since I knew I was just going to keep adding weight it helped me make the decision for the heavy duty Leafs

I don’t have any reference to the part numbers you are posting. However, I’ve had a few different rear leaf spring setups now for different shell setups as well.

If it’s just an unloaded bed with a shell, well then, I suggest a Deaver U402 stage 1.

If it’s a lightly loaded bed and an RTT, I would suggest the Deaver U402 Stage 2.

If it’s same as above but with rear swingout and armor I would suggest the Deaver Stage 3.

If it’s a bed build out with RTT, full recovery gear, water storage, fuel storage, rear swingout bumper... Deaver Custom pack.

I’ve had Icon AAL’s that flattened out within two weeks of a camper shell with a toolbox filled with stuff.

Then I swapped to AllPro Expo springs with the RTT. Those were fine till I did the rear swingout.

I’m now on Custom Deaver Springs. But, my setup has gotten complicated.

But that’s just my experiences. YMMV.

Camper is a SnugTop Rebel with sportsmans package. Found another thread on TW which snugtop quoted weight as 240.

Sounds like the 96Rs it is then.

Ballpark estimate of my load comes to roughly 750lbs. For some context, will essentially be living out of the truck from July-Nov.

The Rebel is the same topper that I just got my quote on. It is 240 lbs bone stock. The dealer I talked to last week said loaded with the sportsman package total weight is close to 500 lbs. the shell is 1” thicker than normal. Again, this is what the dealer said.

Edit, I think the Dakar HD would be the way to go. I think 2-2.5” with 600lbs is what I believe it’s rated at. I have the Dakar med duty which is 2-2.5” with zero weight in the bed. I will be adding the HD leaf to mine.

Looks like we may as well call Snugtop and clear this up. The thread I found the answer on stated 240lbs with the sportsmans package.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/snug-top-rebel-question.462420/

Regardless, just pulled the trigger on the HD 96Rs from Wheeler's

I just called the same place that told me 500. He just said with sportsman package, it’s close to 250lbs. My bad, I had thought 500 seemed excessive but wtf do I know?

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

How long is really hard to tell... especially with roads just now opening up. @Pella and I had to re-route a few times, on saturday, due to road closures and such. Also depends on how often we stop etc.

BUT... we'd be in a whole network of roads. National Forest roads 14, 17, and 31 run through where we will be and you could take those back to 108 or 120 in a relative easy amount of time.

Edit.... I just fucking quoted myself didn't I?
