4.56s and 4.88s is where most second gens land. Ecgs recommended 4.88s but talking to a lot of guys most recommended 4.56s if i drove it on the highway a lot. It is still a DD.

Mine was 2700 i added a front locker which added 900. So 1800 area without the front locker. I did all of the work pulling the diffs out and reinstalling.

Went from 3rd Gen Taco to 3GT4R to 2nd Gen Taco and finally a V8 4GT4R.
you’re correct on this front, 2nd gens don’t have that “extra” overdrive gear like the 3rd gens do. Think the 2nd Gen overdrive is 5th gear and the 3rd gens have 5 and 6? I see most 3rd Gen people go with 5.29 because of this so.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

The Rear End Shop is good. But they are where I'd take the truck if you are buying the gears and locker(s) seperate.

East Coast Gear will build the third members and send them out (with or with out locker). If you have the third member built, you don't really need a shop to install them.

East Coast Gear Supply is where I'm getting ready to order my front diff with locker.

3rd gen 5.29's are the only (reasonable) option according to most 3rd genners. @bot102 recently put his in and hes loving them

im going to wind up on 4.88s i think since im going to be on 34's in a month or so and eventually 35+ when i figure out a few things (and have more money lol)

edit: Ive read alot of guys who went 4.56 and wish they went 4.88

havnt seen too many saying they got 4.88 and wish they went 4.56

Disclaimer: havnt made up my mind 100%

IMHO, There is no reason any 3rd gen that is on larger than stock tires, does NOT go to 5.29's.

I went 4.88s and I'm on 35s. Definitely happy I didnt go 4.56s, but now wish i went 5.29s. @theesotericone's logic and advice and @singletrack_ftw's review of doing so (2nd gen on 35s), both of which i saw after regearing, sold me on it. I'm broke, so not regearing again, but for what its worth, throwing it out there. That said, I don't care about mpg. I'd research 5.29s if your considering 35+.

If you’re a 3rd Gen or 2nd Gen AT / 5:29 or bust. Do your homework & talk to real experts like guys who build toyota crawler for a living and put 5:29 gears in them. My RPMS are very comfortable even at 75mph with 35’s and 5:29 and oh man oh man do I need to tell you how powerful it is having a ratio like that wheeling. It’s unbelievably great, life changing even. The engine braking is sick also. Here’s a pic for proof. My Speedo is obviously off due to tire size hence the satellite screenshot and look at my rpm

Thanks everyone for the replies, I was at FuelFest all day down in LA with my son taking in drifting and drag racing and just got home. Left at 4am this morning. This car has a diesel swap producing 915HP, 1500 foot pounds of torque, with 80lb of boost. The tires instantly broke loose and he walked it around. Nuts
