My father's dad's grandfather's uncle's dad's brother used to change his oil every 3000 miles and never had a problem. Can't argue with that. I do the same.

6 months interval for me. Always around 3-4k every 6 months.

So, I am supposed to let a young buck and a few old dudes with flashlights sell me on this?:)
Seriously though, I have been doing once a year oil changes on my Dakota for many years now, and I sleep well at night. Granted, I have a 2005 that just rolled over 65,000 miles, but still, once a year works for me. I also usually do a once a year oil change on my motorcycle too. When we bought the Rav4 and the salesman said now, Remeber, this only requires an annual oil change, or
10k miles, I said thats fine, cause that's what I would likely do anyway.

I literally takes me 10 minutes to change my oil every 3k. I've been changing oil ever 3k for the past 15 years and imo it's just nice to have piece of mind! I'm sure you could push this new fancy oil for a year or whatever they are saying but I'm simple and if it ain't broke...
I also send my oil out for analysis which is key, I don't believe you should listen to anything others tell you about brand, weight, longevity, additives, etc. No two trucks use oil the same way, get it analyzed and use the data from your or car to make a plan for yourself.

If the deterioration of oil is time based, shouldn't the bottles be marked with a 'use by' date, like milk?

I mean if it's 6 months old when you buy it, it's only got 6 month's of life left, right? ;)

In theory yes, but think about it, in the bottle it is still pure and unmolested. Once put in your engine and heated up, cooled down, the cycle continues, now you are breaking down the detergents and if you do short runs condensation will form if your engine does not get hot enough to burn it off.
So, while it may break down in the bottle, its not much of a concern because the properties are still pure.

I change mine at 5k and I don’t believe science and engineering is a conspiracy.
I am merely following the manual, 5k oil and filter for severe service. I will be sending in my first sample for analysis at 20k which is coming up soon.

What does the oil analysis tell you? Do they recommend going longer, or go ahead and keep to your 3k regimen?

:gossip: My time stamp post was a joke. Mostly.

I change my oil every 10k or 3 years, whichever comes first. Usually the 10k.

    Tribologist recommended, laboratory proven. :hattip:

You are changing your oil out thousands of miles short of a recommended interval and you still send it out for analysis?

I use full synthetic (mobile 1) and change every 5K. Works out to be every 7-8 months. No way I would ever go 10K miles.

My great grandfather used to pour all his used motor oil in a 55 gallon barrel, let it settle, and then skim the oil from the top to put back into his car during the next oil change...

He was a chemist by trade and I guess he figured that was ok.

Even if a lab test said you could go 15k?
