right. so I should be confident to go over 400 miles on a tank of gas or at least know I have roughly another 40 miles to go even when my gauge is buried past E.

I'm bringing the gas can with me next week and stretching this fuel gauge out :D

I'm going for 440 miles on one tank

Not a good idea to run dry on a modern vehicle.
The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel surrounding it and running through it. Now, I've never had a fuel pump fail due to running low, but I've talked to a lot of people who claim they have, and I've had "just fine" experiences with GM products that are supposedly notorious for losing fuel pumps. Potential difference? With my commute and on-call status, I have to have at least 1/4 tank available at all times.
Also, on my Suburban, it had a 43 gallon tank. Do the math... much over 1/2 tank and I'd have to scan my card twice at the gas pump.

But in addition to the pump, it also runs the injectors dry (not good) and results in a lean condition which can overheat and damage the cat.

    But 400+ on a 2.7 2wd 5-lug?

    Absolutely possible:

    I have a 2010 4 auto and I do not think it has a 21 gallon tank.

    It does.

Even the short bed has a 21.1 gallon tank. It doesn't seem like it because the gauge seems to drop so quickly once you get below 1/4, but when the "you're gonna walk" light comes on, there's still over 3 usable gallons left... an easy 50 miles under pretty much any conditions unless you're towing, and potentially 90-100 miles on a 2.7 if you take it really easy and maintain 55-65.

Doing the math, that tank was 24.5mpg... not one of my best tanks, but not one of my worst either.
But I still had a solid 3 gallons usable gas left, so I had at least another 70 miles before it was truly empty. That would have been a 480 mile tank had I run it that far.

Even if you're only getting 20mpg on your 4x4, you can still get 400 miles.

Just bought mine yesterday and had to fill it up today. The dealership promised they would pay for my first fill and then forgot.

Something odd happened at the pump: The manual says a 21.1 gallon tank, my fuel gauge said I had a quarter of a tank left. It took a little over 12 gallons. This seemed a little odd to me and since I'm a HUGE dork and a math teacher, I did a little calculating: If my fuel gauge shows 1/2 a tank, then I should have 10.55 gallons left. Thus, if my fuel gauge shows 1/4 of a tank, I should have 5.275 gallons left. If you subtract that from 21, you get 15.35. Somehow, somewhere I ended up with 3 extra gallons of gas.

Not that I'm complaining but in my math mind, I can't figure out where the extra gas came from. I get that the gauge is just there to give you a general idea of how much fuel you have left and is not an exact science but I thought someone else out there might find it a little interesting.

    It's a gauge. It's not a meter.

It reads "high"... see above photo... low fuel light and needle at about 1/8, yet it took less than 17 gallons which is 19% of my fuel remained.

The Taco gauge is closer than many other vehicles I've driven (WAY better than the stack of 6 LEDs on my '93 Blazer), but it's a gauge... not a meter.

just be happy we're not paying almost $4.50 a gallon lol

obviously these gauges aren't completely accurate, I'm left with another 2.5 gallons when my gauge is buried past E

It was just shy of 17 gallons iirc?...i had to do an errand and drove a bit longer than usual with the warning light on and i always try to stop
the gas pump on an even number...so i probably rounded up to whatever.
    I like symmetry.

and it's definitely a gauge, and the reason i add gas when the light comes on, because you never know...you know?

I drive the same mileage same speed for the most part M-F and know approximately how many miles I can get out of a so called tank when the light comes on. I'm gonna go for over 400 this week

You're assuming that the the 1, 3/4, 1/2, and 1/4 lines represent the entire volume of the tank which is not the case. When your gauge reads "empty" you have roughly 4 gallons in reserve. Your simple division should be based off 17 "usable" gallons of fuel.
