215/75/15 versus 215/70/15 on stock '09

    I just bought an '09 Tacoma last week-base model, 4cyl, 5-speed. I'm looking to replace the OEM tires and there are a lot more options in a 75 series tire. I bought the truck to haul building materials, gear, and my waverunner. Will I b able to notice any appreciable difference with 215/75's versus 215/70's?

    Not much. Step bars, K&N air filter
    i believe the 215/75R15s are only 0.7" taller. if they are cheaper and easier to find, go with the 215/75s. shouldnt throw off speedometer or odometer and deffinitly wont rub. Also, sometimes larger tires are cheaper due to demand. my 2 cents

    x2 you can fit wider tires as well without any rubbing issues stock.

    You can go as far as 235/75/15 without rubbing issues. Trust me the 5lugger with bigger tires looks awesome, just check out my build and see ;)

    With the stock gearing would going up to a 225 hurt power any? I only ask because when I got the truck I expected the gearing to feel a lot lower/shorter with such small tires.

    Does anyone know the gearing in the transmission for the 4cyl Prerunner that has 245/75/16's? I'd like to do some calculations to compare how it's geared versus mine if I went with taller tires.

    I run 31x10.5x15 tires on my 5lugger with stock gearing. Yes it looses some power, however it is not horrible, especially with the 5speed, you just have to know how to work the gearbox.

    Did some looking around on Toyota's website and as I see it the 4x2 Automatic and 4x2 Prerunner use the same rear end gear ratios (3.58) and same tranny but have 215/70/15's and 245/75/16's respectively. I don't know how the gear ratios in the 5-speed manual versus 4-speed auto compare, but considering they run the same rear end gear with tires over 3" different in OD I would assume a jump to 225/75/15's shouldn't cause much difference.

    I went with 235-70-15s and am very happy with the change. It has much more control in a crosswind and the back end does not try to step out like it did with the smaller tires. My speedometer and GPS now agree and the truck looks much better with the bigger tires.

    Are they on factory wheels? If so how do they fit on a 6" wide rim? That's also a size I'm considering.

    215/75's will fit no problem at all. IMO, 235/75's are perfect for a non-lifted 5-Lug. Like WhiteTaco said above me, even 31/10.5's will even fit, I honestly think it's a little too much tire for the stock wheels just because of the lack of backspacing, but they look a hell of a lot better than stock 215 Dunlop craps they put on at the factory.
    I plan on getting some fairly aggressive 235/75/r15's when I have the money.

    I mounted them on the stock wheels without any problem. They are the largest that is recommended on a 6 inch rim. Toyota says a 31" tire will fit on the stock rim without clearance problems on an unlifted truck. I have had no problems with my 235s.

    My 31's rub at full lock. And yes 31's on 6" wide rim are NOT ideal, but they fit :eek:

    Incorrect.

    The 5-lug manuals have 3.31, 5-lug automatics have 3.58.

    The 4cyl 4wd/Prerunners have 4.10 and the 6 cyl 4wd/Prerunners have 3.73

    X-runners have 3.15

    According to the 2011 Tacoma sales brochure that the dealer gave me 4 cyl automatic trans Prerunners have 3.58 along with 5 lug 4 cyl autos. 5 lug 4 cyl manual trans 3.31, all 4 cylinder 4x4s have 4.10s, all V6's except X-runner 3.73, and X-runners are 3.15. And unfortunately there is no manual transmission Prerunners in 2011. Take this info for what it is worth as there can be typos.

    i'm pretty sure your right, as before all 6 lug 2TR trucks had the manual, with a 4.10 final drive, but for the new 6 lug 2TR with autos toyota threw in the 3.58 the 4x4 2TRs still have the 4.10, according to the toyota website.

    That's exactly what the Toyota website says for '11 Prerunner 4cyl auto's.
