I'm sure the Tremor is a great truck. Personally, though, the thought of owning another Ford (or anything not Toyota, really) sends chills down my spine.

i will add that my son had ordered a new xlt fx4 in early 2021 after driving one at a dealer. i got one shipped in to buy, XL fx4 cactus grey supercab (like the taco's access cab), and he drove it with me while i used sport mode. he had zero idea about sport mode. he then drove it in sport mode and was super enthused at that point to cancel his order and get one by flying out of state and driving it back. He comes from a history of newer mustangs and older fox bodies so he likes power. so unless you try sport mode in these things, you have no idea what you are missing. that does come with the price of the turbo/direct injection gas in oil thing BUT if you do 5000 mile oilc hanges, you are golden. Probably. it is a ford after all...so that's why i bought the nice and long bumper to bumper warranty for $1600 clams. ;-)

Weird comparison. The Ford Ranger Tremor is a lot more expensive.

Anyway I test drove a Ranger XLT and thought it was a really comfortable ride with decent power. One little thing I didn’t like is that it doesn’t have a power rear window like the Tacoma.

Overall I felt like the Ranger was just too boring for me …. I felt the same way about the Canyon/ Colorado. I think they’re all more capable than the Tacoma but the Tacoma is better looking, should stay out of the shop and hold its value better.

the drivetrain of the tacoma MAY be more reliable, but i am disappointed with the fit and finish and the rattles and noises that have developed. my tacoma is not a solid truck. and when i look at the crappy way the exhaust is routed, the misaligned bed, etc., there's no comparison between the two in terms of fit and finish. the ford is much better and so was the ram i owned before.

i would take my chances on the drivetrain reliability and get a ranger even though i could not get an MT which was the main reason i purchased a tacoma. for me, the MT isn't enough to overcome the cheap feeling the tacoma has.

Owned an xlt sport super crew Ranger 4wd for almost 3 years, got a new trd sport Tacoma now that I like much better. To me, the Tacoma is a much better truck to do truck stuff with.

None to speak of, just enjoying it for the moment.
I really liked the Ranger and it was second on my list behind the Tacoma when I was looking at getting a new truck. I had a Ford and knew about the issues with the "Eco-Boost" engine and the less than stellar transmissions (mine had to be completely replaced out of warranty). The all wheel drive transfer case had to be replaced as well and leaked after that until the day I sold it. The Ranger is a decent truck but I felt the reliability of the Tacoma would give me greater satisfaction in the out years but only time will tell. I do tend to keep my vehicles 10+ years. The final straw was the complete failure of the EPAS system due to excessive corrosion, over 3500.00 repair, and the vehicle built 5 months after mine Ford acknowledged the issue and was replacing them but for some reason, despite mine displaying the exact same conditions, having never been parked or driven in water they just basically said too bad, tough luck. I know they were under no obligation to help me but a good dealership that valued their customers would look at helping out to keep a customer but even when I mentioned the irony they just shrugged and agreed that I was out of luck! Even if I bought a Ranger I was not going to buy it at that dealership for sure! I am exceedingly please with my Limited Nightshade Tacoma and do not regret the purchase at all.

Depends how much time you want to spend bringing the truck back to the dealer for warranty related issues.

This. I wouldn't say the Ranger is ugly, but I definitely wouldn't say it's good looking.

Have had several Rangers on rides with us of different trim packages. For the most part if you're looking to do more aggressive off roading any vehicle you buy will have a ton of aftermarket parts from the frame down. So really how makes the truck is all 8th grade dance bullshit of this brand is better for this and that. Whats important to you, looks Interior, engine stuff like that. The Eco boost engine is capable of some serious HP/Torque numbers with a simple emailed tune so that is a big selling point and makes the Ranger more fun to drive. As for looks its not terrible but I cant get over how small the back glass is. It has to be like 8 inches or so.

both are prob good at offroading, but the ford is top of the line model and trail isnt, but if its looks thats just a choice for the buyer, and for me the ford looks fine but a low nose and a too big/deep/high bed and truck seems kinda narrow - not wide enough looking

they are a tad smaller then the tacomas! but the crazy thing is how much more room in the cabin the ranger has! for stock offroad id have to say a trd pro would be better for one reason the ranger of any trim has a single leaf pack design and it has zero flex! but as many have stated that can be changed!

Those are all great things. Ballpark 5k in upgrades to the Tacoma? I don’t know about the ranger but I do know where I live I see fords of all types and years on the sides of the highway broken down all the time. Very rarely if ever have I seen a Tacoma or 4 runner. The past few months I’ve even seen a few h2s and 3s. Personally had a few fords that hit the dust prematurely with proper maintenance. I would say if your trading in in few years you can’t go wrong with either. If you plan on keeping for any extended amount of time tacoma.

so upgrades is depending tbh on what you want to do with the truck but lets say the basic things
    suspension
    tires
    wheels
these are the more common things people start off with usually. these trucks use the same bolt pattern so they can use the same wheel just different offset so that can range on price but id say about 5k is good for both to get going.

the plus side to the ranger is it has a steel front bumper and steel skids underneath that go back to the trans and they are rather thick skids so unless you are rock crawling it would do alright.

for reliability it seems most are doing fine since this motor has been in the rs and was updated to fix the head gasket issue on em but again its still a newer truck so who knows but to wait and see i know a few people on the forums already have over 100k miles and they are still doing good. long term for the chassis will be fine since this truck has been sold overseas for years now and people beat the crap out of them over there and they still live but most are running the diesel engine idk if they get the same 2.3 or not.
