Great…and I would do that when? 95%+ people never “bump start” the truck. The clutch start cancel is great in the winter when you can start the truck without getting into it. For most people I think a clutch start cancel
Button is pretty useless, that’s an old Toyota thing they’ve kept around my 94 (pre Tacoma) Tacoma had that button. I’d rather a better key setup.

Clutch start cancel and smart key aren’t mutually exclusive for technical reasons. You could have both.

Toyota didn’t think it was worth developing, which is a bit sad. I like smart key.

Still, I like manual more, but yeah, it should have been an option.

Think I have seen a few access cab SRs with a 4 banger. SR5 has that chrome surround, access cabs that I’ve seen had the black SR surround.

Wife’s Highlander has the smart key, my MT doesn’t.
Mixed bag, nothing wrong with the smart key and the proximity lock/unlock is nice.
I would really like the proximity stuff, neutral on the start button, love the cancel switch, and recognize the MT is quite a bit cheaper so I happily “suffer” having to push the unlock button on the key fob

I might however casually look into the smart key computer…

Even though that is not what that switch was designed for, I have started my truck from the passenger seat after only being able to get in that door after an ice storm.

A good locksmith can make and program whatever you want. This is my ‘third’ key.

I accidentally bent my spare key for my M/T Taco and as a result it would no longer start my truck. The power door lock/unlock buttons still work and the key will manually unlock/lock driver's door and tailgate.

I had a locksmith make me a spare key for $105CAD with no power buttons but it will manually unlock/lock the driver's door, and tailgate, and it has the proper programing to start the truck as well.

I was more responding to the ‘wish it was a flip key’ topic, as the push button on a MT topic has already been covered.

So is the clutch cancel switch the reason why? I’m totally cool with having a physical key but nobody at Toyota could explain why it was never an option. Everyone kept saying it was because it was a MT, though shortly after I took delivery of my Tacoma a friend of mine bought a 2021 Corolla SE also 6MT but he has a smart key and push button start so I never accepted that answer :notsure:

Cost cutting. They know the people who want a manual will buy it regardless of what they exclude/include. This particular trim is not high volume or a priority for them, if they can save a few pennies on each one built (materials/programming), they will (ie; removal of cubbies from year to year, rear drums, manual rear sliding window on AC, etc…). They know their audience.

The key assembly and tumbler are probably 1000X more expensive than a button and an antenna. People talk like electronics make cars expensive. It’s the other way around. They are giving you push button start because it is cheaper.

Same with digital dashboards and touch screens. Individual buttons and gauges are expensive. Screens?……..they almost give away these days.

You wouldn’t use the ‘Clutch Start Cancel’ switch to bump start your truck, you would use it to start your truck while on a steep incline where you don’t have a free foot to work the Clutch. Having that feature was a major selling point for me as I actually find myself in situations like that.

Also it should have been pretty obvious what sort of key the truck came with while on the test drive

While true, they would have had to do some R&D to make all that work with the Clutch Start Cancel and whatnot. Why put any amount of time into that when you can use stuff you’ve been using for years already.
They just recycled programming/frequencies/sequences that they’ve already used in Scions for most MT trucks.
Toyota also uses their own Denso (because they have ownership stake in Denso) stuff as opposed to most car companies who will turn to a third party for their car security (ie; Bosch). This is why most Toyota theft procedures can be replicated through the entire lineup of Toyota/Lexus (and why the Lexus card works on some Toyotas). No other car manufacturer does this the way Toyota does. Anyway… I digress.

I agree that cluch start cancel is not needed to roll start. I roll start my MT Corolla what does not have it and have never used it to roll start my 1st gen Taco, not tried on the 3rd gen yet, but don't anticipate needing it.

That said, on steep hill starts you should not need the clutch start cancel nor the parking break. On level ground with the parking break on practice letting the clutch out slowly until the engine bogs, get to the point you can consistently bog the engine without killing it.

Now, you do the same thing on a hill, let the clutch out until the engine is holding the vehicle, if you get it correct you can be off both the break and gas without rolling back.

Unfortunately no one taught me that and I hated hill starts from 14 to 21, it was teaching my wife to drive MT that caused me to put it together and it has been manny years since I have feared people pulling up really close to me on hill starts.

An accumulator delete really helps the feel of the 3rd gen clutch. You will have to go really slow on the clutch for consistency if you still have an accumulator.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mt-accumulator-delete-mod-adm-and-bs-thread.568303/

As for the test drive, in the current market most people are putting down deposits months in advance and dealers have no stock to test drive, much less stock in something as low production as MTs.

I was talking about using the switch when off-road on a trail. In the city I’ve needed or used the Clutch Start Cancel switch.

As far as test drives go, I understand that inventory is low, however before I would personally take delivery of a new (or any) vehicle I would take it for a test drive.
