I read that the Iforce turbo has 2 different power specs, the base model at 228hp, the higher packages, running the same motor, 278hp, more torque as well. The dealer gives hasn't any information, at least that he's willing to share. I'm assuming more boost, anybody know how much? Can I just get the base model and get a tune to get the extra power?

Be aware there are a host of other differences in the SR model (228hp) and the SR5 and up models (278hp). Chief among these differences are leaf springs in the rear rather than the coil sprung rear the higher models have.

I don't think there's an oil cooler and perhaps several other things.

The hybrid system is where the extra power comes from. Its not for better fuel economy .

    Well...

Entry-level Toyota Tacoma models use a turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder engine with 228 HP and 243 lb-ft of torque, while all other grades have an increased output of 278 HP with 317 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid generates 326 net combined HP and 465 lb-ft of low-end torque.

First I'd be finding out if the base model has the same drivetrain components to be able to handle more HP and torque, then I'd be finding out how it would affect my warranty. I don't think there would be any cost benefit to going base and then spending money to try to make it equivalent to a higher trim somehow. Seems like more of something to try on a used one that is out of warranty in several years. JM2C

The dealer will have to change the software. And that's probably not going to happen.

It won't take long for someone to start tuning the 4th gen. VWs, BMWs, Subarus, etc do it all the time and crank up the boost

That's like buying a 60's car with a 2bbl carb and swapping over to a 4bbl and the cam that came with the 4bbl.

Except the de-tuning in this case is done via software.

I'm sure you're right, but I suspect that would throw the warranty in the gutter.

Maybe, maybe not. I got a water pump replaced in my Golf R under warranty and it was tuned to make almost 30psi. If you're tuned and throw a rod, you may be SOL though.

What gets me is the dealer can't tell me how the extra power is achieved, Toyota's customer service won't tell me. Driving the 3 different rated power setups I can feel the difference in the butt dyno. Looking at the base model because I can pay cash

Can't find the thread, but supposedly the SR trim has lesser cooling capacity and was tuned for reduced power for that reason.

Wow, that would make sense if that's true and they increased the boost, that would make more heat. Thanks soupy1234, I'll see if I can find that thread

I know the SR doesn't have the engine oil cooler as the trims above it.

Are the turbo charger part numbers the same? Maybe one has a bigger turbo? That's a pretty significant power difference.

Another good idea, this is when the forum works right! Didn't think about that, I'll check into to see if they list anything. Thx
