Just got a 2023 Toyota gold certified Tacoma sr 4x4 v6 with 8000 miles on it. It starts around 28mph at 1000-1500rpm. Ac is off and running the stock Firestone destination tires. Link the video with noise. Couldn’t figure out how to post the video here. https://www.reddit.com/r/ToyotaTacoma/s/AuOh2Mvdsx

probably the rear differential, many do it. Mine is faint, and I elected to leave it, rather than having the dealer techs monkey with it. I'd rather have an OE with a faint whine, then a hacked up rear axle.
My GF's 4R does the same.

Does yours make the same noise as mine in the video? Just trying to get peace of mind or find a day to take the hour drive to the dealership

In March I bought a used 21 with 30,000 miles. It has a very distinct whine starting at 20mph that continues till other road noise drowns it out. It’s still under warranty but I wouldn’t buy it till they certified it, so I’m covered for awhile. Took it in last month for them to look at and have a new differential ordered. This isn’t the same howl that my other 3rd gen had, sounds like a bearing is going out.
This is my 4th 3rd gen Tacoma and the other 3 had the rear diff replaced under warranty also.

I’ve had 6 brand new 3rd generation Tacomas and every one has had a whine usually at about 80-90 km per hour. Totally normal, it’s not the rear differential but some kind of frame resonance noise at certain speed.

Amsoil 75-110 and a slight whine. I have ignored it as no other issues when I changed the diff fluid out at 25k when I bought it last year. Already have 33K on it and I tow with mine. Drain plug was clean when I pulled it out at the change.

Yea this 21 does have a bearing going out. After I got it home, changed to gear oil and might of drained out 1 quart. Assuming it come that way from the factory because the fill plug had never been broke loose and was serviced everytime at the dealer.

At 30k miles, I drained the rear diff fluid because of the whining noise, which dealer "checked" and told me it's normal.

It was 1 full quart short of from the factory.

I refilled with some Castrol with LSD additives, the noise is 90% gone.

OP, I listened to the video and I don’t hear anything abnormal.

I would take it in and have the dealer check it out for peace of mind.

Whew....thank God I'm not the only one who couldn't hear it. Curse my old ears dagnabbit!

I get an intermittent....what I would call, faint howl once in a while. In any other truck I would've thought the rear end bearings were on their way out but apparently normal on a Taco.

I hear it slightly. My ‘23 rear end whine is at 50-55mph and louder exactly as the TSB calls out. Seems kind of slow to trigger the harmonic resonance in these diffs, no?

I can barely hear anything in that vid.

Funny I was considering making a similar post, I tried to deep dive into this yesterday and got nowhere.

I couldn’t hear anything until I installed a BAMF rear diff skid plate then I could hear a cyclical/rotation kind of noise at 22mph (like a bearing going bad).

Not a howl as others have had and never found an example of that howl to compare.

Parked on flat ground, blocked the front tires, used the floor jack under the diff skid to hold the rear tires in the air (jack stands too), had to long press the trac-off to disable it and “drove” in place at 20-25 mph and could hear it. (I should have filmed it).

Took off the tires, had a neighbor “drive” it and it sounded loudest at the right rear.

He crawled under and felt around and he thought the diff skid was the source.
The floor jack was supporting all of the weight via the diff skid.
I loosened all the bolts and retightened pretty damn tight….and no difference, same sound.

Not sure what to do at this point. Maybe take off the skid and see?

My thought is that the skid is like cupping your hand to your ear and directing the sound and making it more noticeable?

    edit-
Also last year I mounted my GoPro on the diff and drove around and you can hear the sound, a bit different than putting the phone on the rear seat.

The oil only has 10k on it.

Installed brand new front rotors and pads, checked and replaced all of my idle pulleys and serpentine belt. There’s no play in the wheel movements vertical or horizontal when checking the wheel bearing. I’m kinda losing my mind trying to figure this out, short of taking it to a shop. Any ideas?
