holy shit run the fuck away. look at that dif!! For fucks sake I just bought a 2013 Long Traveled, 4x4, front and rear lockers, full skids, and bumpers and 14,000 miles for $24k

If you are the type of guy to ask opinions and go against what the general public is telling you, then you are looking at a long list of repairs about to drain your bank accounts

I would pass. I just bought mine in Quebec a couple months back. It's a 2011 with 70k kms that was driven all year round and the frame is still 99% covered with black factory paint and is moist with grease. That thing looks bone dry like it's never been rustproofed. A little bit of surface rust is nothing to be worried about, it's going to happen eventually but that thing has clearly been neglected and sellers are asking top dollar. Pass forsure!

EDIT. Just FYI, for the area I think 22-23k is a good price for it if it was mint. I paid 19.5k for mine but it an access cab SR5 4cyl 5sp. Vehicles a f****** expensive up here

I just tried doing a simple CL search for Ontario Canada and there isn't any Tacoma's.
I suggest, like someone said before, try cargurus.com or carmax.com

I just went through a similar buying process.

I spent a month and a half hunting for trucks.

There are so many rusty trucks out there. I almost pulled the trigger on one that was beginning to have surface rust, but my mechanic painted the picture "don't spend money on a vehicle because it looks good, but the frame needs work. If you get rear ended, and it's rusted through anywhere, you won't be covered."

I wound up holding off, and purchasing a 2009 Sr5 4x4 manual in a different color.

I don't know about Canada, but in NY state, there are stricter laws for dealers to sell vehicles. I found mine at a dealership, negotiated the price and was able to bring it back a few times as it had a limited dealership warranty.

Remember, you're buying someone else's truck & you want it to last.

Coincidentally, I went on here to see of any feedback on treating Tacoma's with Eastwood Encapsulator. I'm brushing off the rust and will hit it tomorrow.

    Good luck!

Seeing this makes me so glad I don't live in the snow belt anymore. That much rust on a 2010. What a crock.

My 2009 from New York looked similar to that. I wasn't so concerned with the frame rust as I wire wheeled it all off, painted the frame, and Eastwood treated the internal parts of the frame. It has held up well. The problem arises when it comes time to do any maintenance or work on the truck. My LCAs were frozen, I've snapped multiple bolts by simply trying to loosen them, and installing my lce header proved to be quite the chore due to rust. I got a pretty good deal when I bought it, but I probably wouldn't buy another rust bucket unless the price was too low to pass up.

You could frame swap with this truck, it appeared better maintained! Im in ontario and my 2009 never looked like that. that thing looks like it was in a lot of salt. You will find a cleaner one eventually

So ... let me give you my story of rust. My wife was given a 98 Rav4 as her first car in high school, she's from the NE where it snows a lot. Maybe not Canuck a lot .. or a-loot as you might say, but still, snow, salt, and that nasty. Her and her dad took care of washing it regularly and sprayed the underside off. They also owned a Camry at the time, and did the same kind of care with it. When she went off to college she left the Rav4 behind (living on campus in big city, no need for car), and except for some use during the winter by her parents, because all-terrain tires and AWD is good for snow, it mostly just sat around and collected dust. Her dad says he kept up with washing the car, but I really don't know beyond what he says.

During that time her dad kept the same Camry (kept till nearly 300k miles!), and then part way through med school my wife got her Rav4 back. This is nearly 8 years later. The RAV4 only had 68k miles on it, looked great, interior perfect, ran and drove fine, but the entire underside of the chassis and every component was rusted to hell. The oil pan was so badly rusted that it no longer sealed properly and dripped oil, plus there were soft spots I'm pretty sure I could poke through if I tried. The K-Member was peeling apart like an onion. The brake lines and everything was just completely rusted closed. Her dad's Camry, the one that was used daily, hardly any rust other than typical surface stuff. So, lesson is, don't let things sit, they need to be used and heat cycled.

Now, I'm pretty good at working on these types of messes, I have some experience with old cars ... my blow torch, sledge hammer, and Kroil have never failed me before. Yet when I went to do the most basic of maintenance on this car 3 out of 5 bolts would snap off no matter how careful I was or how much Kroil and heat I applied. I finally gave up when I went to replace the oil pan and the exhaust broke off, which required many many hours with a dremel, drill, and exhaust RTV to fix ... fuck that was a mess... I drove it for a few years because I was worried about safety and it breaking down and leaving my wife stranded. The car ran great, the engine had no problems, and it really frustrated me that even the most basic of maintenance was an endeavor of epic proportions. I was going to drive it until I had the $ for a new vehicle, or until something like the alternator broke and I was unwilling to go through the hassle of attempting repair.

Now, if I was looking at something like what you showed, I wouldn't necessarily write it off right away, but my past experience with rusty Toyotas has made me very weary of them. Now, from what I can see that truck is nowhere near as bad as the RAV4 was. However, I really can't say without being there in person and going over every single inch, and I would absolutely want to do so with the truck up on a lift with good lighting. I'd go around poking at all the rust on the frame with a pocket knife to see if any of it is all the way through. If so, walk. If the bolts and nuts look like they are little blooming onions, walk. But if it turns out that it's just some light surface rust on the underside, I mean, as far as used trucks go, you may be hard pressed in your area to find better. I know here in SE Michigan I tried real hard to find a used 2nd gen Tacoma (or 1st gen, but none of those found ...), but all the ones I thought price was fair on were rusted beyond what I was comfortable getting into after my last experience wth the RAV4. The rusted used trucks I saw were worse looking than what you showed, there would be body rust up in the rocker panels and shit, just nasty, plus the ones I found that weren't rusted badly like that were so expensive that it just made more sense to buy a new truck since I could afford it.

That rust definitely needs a solid inspection up on a lift though, and if you're not familiar with these types of things it would behoove you to take it to a professional that is familiar with inspecting new vehicles and judging rust damage. Call around, and I'm sure you can find someone in your area that specializes in this. As an example, the mechanics in my area wouldn't even touch the RAV4, they would refer me to a specialist who does rusted cars. The rust specialists work on cars like that, and they charge by the hour instead of by the job, so I'm sure there is even more room for them to over charge and you never know, so obviously less than ideal to let someone like that work on your car. However, someone with experience working on those types of cars can maybe give you good feedback on how fucked this truck is.

I would definitely use this as leverage to work the price down some more. Once you have a mechanic inspect it they might be able to point out other problems that need to be addressed, and that's more leverage to work the price down.

Haggling is fun, don't be afraid to try and use leverage to work someone down. :)

You might end up with a pretty clean body/interior and just some surface rust on the bottom, but you need to inspect it more!
