I monitor temps at the torque converter and have seen them reach 245 in the mountains. Since then I've installed an aux plate cooler for the transmission but haven't towed with it hooked up yet.

Dude, that sway master looks slick. Don’t think I’ll be pulling the trigger on it this trip (renting a 24 footer in a couple weeks) because I’ll be learning and driving like a grandma, but if I ever get serious I’ll give it another look.

OP, I’m roughly in your shoes here, first timer, about the same length/weight. I’ve added a P3 brake controller, k source towing mirrors, an ez lift wd hitch (keep in mind ordering these that bigger is not better, price is right rules: closest to rating without going over), thr BAFX Wifi OBD scanner and the OBD fusion app (keep in mind on OBD fusion you have to do another $10 in-app to get access to the trans temp monitors. Super cool app once its dialed in though).

I bought a Timbren SES kit, but I regret that, haven’t hooked up the rig yet but I’ll be doing my best to get sag-free without the rubbers.

Also, with the bafx, it used Wifi for the iPhone version. If you’re android get the Bluetooth. If you’re using Wifi, and you still want your phone to browse online, you have to turn off the dynamic IP address. Getting off topic, Hit me up if you need help with that.

    Good luck!

when you haul a light long wind sail, it can be scary when a big wind hits and tosses your truck around like being on ice

I have seen it happen in front of me a few times over the years and no one wants to lose their load this way

Mine definitely feels underpowered when towing our 14' Starcraft, and it only weighs ~2400 lbs dry. I have a lift and 33s so I didn't expect much else, but definitely consider your current mods if you're gonna tow as well.

Dropped my son's 3100 lb pop up on my 14 dc trd 4x4 off road with tow package and pulled it 210 miles in the mtns of New Hampshire, ie next to mt washington, and really didnt even know it was there. Towed in 4th gear the whole way and let the tranny do its thing. Couldnt ask for a better tow vehicle, and got 27.5 mpg while towing. Seems like 3000 rpm and load on her was her sweet spot.

You drove 210 miles with that load in the mountains and only had to put in 7.6 gallons?

Turd Gen here, but I pull a 3400# UltraLite trailer with an Eaz-lift WD hitch that has friction sway control built in. All stock except Load E BFGs and Method Wheels. I pulled it a few weeks ago fully loaded with 30 gallons of water and full gear with a cooler loaded up with beverages and 40lbs of ice.

Pulled it from 2300ft to 7000ft and it did fine. You might struggle if you start adding more weight. I met another local with a 2015 2nd Gen and he pulls an Imagine that weighs in at 6000#. He is also Magnuson Supercharged, air bagged, and uses WD and sway control also.

Welcome to the travel trailer life.

i cant get that commuting to work, nevermind towing in mountains. Heck, i towed my mothers 1600 lb popup across two mildy hilly towns and got 15. That had to be all downhill. Thats the last ill argue about it, but i just think thats not possible

Gentlemen the point is it happened and the math double checked. Yes on the fuel used to cover that milage. I get around 21 to 22 empty and not towing. The fact is the engines sweet spot for towing is around 2800 to 3000 rpm in 4th gear.

This is the 3rd time I've towed with that much weight and on all 3 occasions I averaged 25.5 to 27.5 mph. That rpm range appears to be the sweet spot for my Tacomas torque and economy. Believe it or not it happened for all you arm chair mechanics.

by this calculation i should get like 35 mpg when towing.......instead of averaging around 10-12 for roughly 5k pounds

Just my opinion but i felt uncomfortable towing my 24 ft 4200 lb( dry weight) trailer. i had a good load leveling equalizer hitch ,a P3 brake controller, When you add your family ,your gear, your water if your going off the grid that weight can be pushing well past 5000lbs.The truck will do it but at what cost down the road. IMO that 6500 tow rating for my TRD sport truck is too much.
