That's what I was going to say. Sounds exactly like mine. Pretty sure we're going to get a whole lot of these threads in the very near future.

I'm just waiting for people to slap an exhaust system on them and it sounds like a bumble bee farting in a tin can

LOL definitely. Reminds me of the people thinking their 3rd gen was broke when it started the valve cleaning cycle.

Based on your video it sounds like you got the V8 version bro. Count your blessings and don’t tell anyone about it.

Yeah a few bugs, zero recalls on the 24, couple of problems like the grill shutter which was a simple fix once parts were available. The grill shutter is a common problem on numerous Toyota products unfortunately.

A huge recall (frame welds) on 381,000 22's and 23's just dropped a month or two ago. Imagine that...a recall on the last model year of the 3rd gen. I guess it's not just the first model years. When I took mine in for the grill shutter problem I got a 23 Tacoma rental to drive.

After driving my new one for a few weeks then getting in the 3rd gen 23 it really made me realize how dated the interior looked. Wow, that tiny dark screen! But the 2 biggest things that really stood out were how much more responsive the new trucks powertrain is compared to the old V6, and how bad that go kart seating position is!

Agreed I traded in my 23 for the 24 and it is a night and day difference as far as interior but more importantly drive ability no more wonky gear hunting and shudder feeling like your in to high of a gear on the fourth gen.

when you cold start it, you will hear a pretty loud clatter noise, and then miraculously it goes away, that is just the electronically controlled high-pressure pump, sitting in the back on top of the valve cover area, nothing to worry about, Ford Ranger does the same thing but Ford actually put a real foam sound deadening pad over it

I'd like to say my 24 TRD Sport is nice and quiet but I am hearing the same noisy lifter clatter sound that you are talking about. And to add insult to injury as of yesterday with 1450 miles on it I got a notice on my instrument cluster saying... [12V Battery Charging System Malfunction. Visit your dealer.]
I checked on it today to see if the fault had magically cleared itself only to find 3 more messages... [Check Engine, Visit Your Dealer] [Drive-Start Control Malfunction] and [Grille Shutter Malfunction]. I'm thinking I've got some growing pains in my future. Not to mention time wasted setting at a Dealership Service Lobby].

Express your disappointment, politely, and request a free rental… Out of curiosity if you got a voltmeter at home, start the truck and see if you’re getting battery voltage or if the alternators charging 14+ volts-ish…
Just for your own knowledge, simple enough, but regardless, get your ride to the dealer…

Apparently that’s a common problem right now and it all comes back to the active grill shutter gathering moisture in the connection. From everything I’ve read and seen it’s a pretty easy fix it’s just getting the replacement part to fix it. Toyota corporate just called me and said they haven’t been able to reach one of the main engineers because he’s in training this week. So they said they would call me back next Tuesday and give me a for sure answer but from what he gathered it’s completely normal operation supposedly.

Think I need to start driving mine more… It’s got 200 miles on it, hasn’t seen any moisture, hasn’t been out in the rain, has only been washed twice, both by the dealer, when I first bought it, and when they did the paint correction on the door.

The fix is simple. They will replace the grill shutter and all those messages will go away. The truck is drivable but know your cruise won't work, auto braking won't work. The only other issue will be the annoying pop up messages that won't go away. It took 30 days for my new shutter to arrive. Hopefully they are getting parts faster now. Unfortunately this grill shutter isn't just a Tacoma thing. It happens on other Toyota vehicles as well. The repair cost is $850 if anyone was wondering. All covered by warranty of course. Good luck!

Is the new turbo 4 direct + port injection, or DI only?

Wife and I just got a 2024 Grand Highlander as our "family car" people mover, it has the same turbo inline 4 banger. It too makes the exact same noise right after a cold start and accelerating down the road. Then 10 minutes or so later (give or take) the sound will be gone and the engine runs and sounds great. Maybe I'll take it in to the dealer and report it just to get it on record that we have this problem

I don’t own a 24 but from the videos I’ve seen the new engine sounds like a diesel almost. Seems pretty noisy

To both of you, have a question...
Sounds like moisture is getting into the connector & / or motor from what everyone is saying....
could be anything & toyota just like most manf arent transparent for the most part. Could be a cheap Chinese motor that never got sealed correctly or cheaply made / sourced...
In both of your separate situations, would you guess that the "moisture" came more-so from washes or rainy conditions?
Just trying to make sense of this....
Theres a guy on utube, "the unrestricted"
he also had a shutter issue, but no idea if his was more rain vs washing.....
Not like it matters, but another piece of the puzzle...

Mine was on the showroom floor when I bought it. I drove it home and the weather was nice so I never washed it or drove it in the rain before it happened. The malfunction happened in a dry Costco parking lot. It was about 60 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.
