Very good info, doesnt sound like a moisture issue from what youre saying, atleast not induced by actual "water" saturation....
If thats the case, we may see more of this!
Im in san diego & hasnt seen rain, just 2 washed by dealer.
    No issues as of yet.....

I washed the truck Thursday and didn't drive it until Saturday and Sunday.
There wasn't any rain or wet roadways either day so I'm guessing it was the Thursday washing.

RideTime, It seems I only have the alerts. My Autobraking and Cruise are still working.
Maybe this faulty or poorly designed/manufactured Grille Shutter can produce variable or different symptoms ??

I’ve had two Mini Coopers and two BMW Z4s — all with turbo fours — and none of them sounded like that. Those were BMW engines, so obviously not an apples-to-apples comparison to the new Tacoma engine. But my point is, not all turbo fours sound like that.

The B48 you probably had in the minis/maybe BMW's likely had much more sound deadening fwiw

Yeah it's still dual injection, but it doesn't do the same loud cleaning cycle that the 3rd gen's did with the 2gr-fks.

Record the noise … document …document …everything… being that it’s a new truck Toyota won’t act on it till it becomes a wide spread issue ..Toyota is just bad at addressing issues take the 3rd gen how long it took for most complaints to have a tsb released for it .

There are going to be issues when a vehicle is changed this drastically. New things are tried. Some will work well and some wont.
Some outsourced products that Toyota can't oversee production on can be defective and they can't do anything but listen to the complaints and do a recall. The big air bag recall for example that affected the automobile industry with 67M recalls.
Toyota is apparently having issues with AGS (Activated Grille Shutters?) that I've been told can throw a multitude of fault codes. My 24 Tacoma TRD Sport is currently having this issue. I can't compare the 4th Gen Tacomas to any of the others because this is my first, but this truck is smooth, quick off the line and handles great! We'll just have to deal with the growing pains.

So tired of hearing this ‘first year model’ BS. I had a 2005 and a 2016. Neither had a single issue. Buy the truck you want.

Same. My 2016 had no issues up to 187k miles. That’s when the blower motor went out. Cost me $93 and my a/c was fixed. Only had to change the pulleys and typical wear items, sold it two weeks ago at 211k miles.

I hope and expect the new truck to be just as reliable. I’m sure there will be some bugs but I expect the same Toyota reliability. They’ve been using this motor in other vehicles, same with all the “new” tech. I don’t think Toyota would risk their reputation unless they were confident the redesigns would live up to the Toyota standard.

Let’s be honest, nobody is buying a Toyota because they have the latest and greatest tech. We buy them because we know they’re going to work when we need them to. Time will tell but I’m very happy with my new truck.

Guess that is normal for the turbo engine.

Exactly. Toyota has been building reliable trucks for 30+ years and that’s why they have the reputation they have, that’s why this forum has a gazillion members and that’s why they are the most popular midsize truck year in and year out. Why would we think just because it’s a 4 cylinder turbo we should be concerned about reliability? I guess everyone has forgotten that Toyota has built 4 cylinders since 1940.

I wonder if they borrowed some engineering from their heavy duty company Hino.

The old 4 cylinder engines were not turboed. We have to wait and see if someone can drive it over 500k miles without issues.

Does that matter? Why wouldn’t we trust Toyota to build a 4 cylinder that could hold up to a tiny turbo?

That guy with 1.5m Tacoma, the engine didn't have turbo. Why don't you buy Tacoma with turbo engine and reach 1.5 m miles?
