    What's up TW!!
I sold my 2008 back in 2011 and I haven't been here since. I'm looking at buying a 1st gen and I'm astounded at what people are asking. I found an '02 DC TRD Off-road Limited with 250,000 on the clock. They're asking $12,000. It's super clean with zero rust. 20 pages of maint. records including two timing belts. I think I can talk them down a bit but I don't want to be making payments on a truck that takes a dump in a year or so. Should I even consider this truck or keep looking?

I have an 02 with 110k I'd sell you for 12 grand :) Sure it's got the 2.7 and isn't a trd, but it has 6 figures fewer on the clock!

Thanks man, but I'm really looking for the 3.4. I've got a camp trailer and other toys I'd like to be able to easily pull.

    Lot of miles.

    Lot of money.

Someone will pay it, those trucks are harder to find every year.

I'm not actually trying to sell it. Just saying for 12k, I'd give you the keys :)

In other words, that's a LOT of money for what you're describing.

In March 2010, I flew to Phoenix to buy my 2006 DCSBTRDOR 4x4 with 80k miles, for $15k. Even 6 years ago, $12k is way too much for that.

My '01 DCSB TRD SR5 4x4 was 12.5k w/ 222k miles on it, but the truck was immaculate. Previous owner never wheeled it, always had it maintained, oils were just changed... pretty much a cream puff, and I literally did nothing to it, but get it under my name with DMV. The first gen Tacoma's (01 - 04) are rather expensive, but completely worth it in my opinion. 12.5k was a stretch though. I would keep looking and try to aim for the 10/11k mark for a really good/well maintained Tacoma.

Good luck hunting for one!

I found my '04 TRD 4x4 last week with only 25,000 miles on it...I waited and waited until I found a low mileage one. Dealer asked for $20k, I talked them down a little bit, but from all my looking I know I paid a fair price for a loaded first gen with so few miles.

$12,000 for a truck with that many miles seems steep. I know these trucks last forever but 200k+ miles is a lot for any vehicle. Personally, I'd hold out and keep looking...there are a lot of late model first gens out there with around 100 - 150k for about that same price.

I would rather something that has an appropriate amount of miles on it for its year. I think I may have passed on the one you bought blue. Must have only gone to the dump once a month.

The 01-04 DC TRD will always fetch a higher price than any comparable 2nd gen, they are more desirable, normally. I don't want what you get with a 2nd gen, I don't want a midsize (nearly half-ton), drive by wire, plasticy truck. That's my opinion and I am sure that it is shared by enough people to keep that resale price high. It is more than I am willing to pay, but I'm also not in the market. If my truck was stolen or wrecked tomorrow, I am not sure that I would replace it with a Tacoma, period, mainly due to what it would cost to get into a low enough mileage 1st gen DC, locker or no.

FYI starting sometime in '03 (V6) Toyota switched to their version of "drive-by-wire" but to be honest it never really felt like it.

    ^^^this is true^^^

Just a rant here but it drives me nuts that people pay so much for some of these trucks that should be worth 6 or 7 grand or less. It has just drivin the prices so friggin high its crazy! The people that arent tacoma crazy, when they go to sell their rig youll see them for sale for reasonable monies because they understand its getting pretty damn old and yes they run a long time but 200k+ is alot of miles. But people seem to keep forking out 12-17k on trucks that honestly should be worth 6k or so. If a guy looks hard enough and has cash in hand ready to buy right then you can find them for normal costs. I have two tacos and a runner, all three had around 100k on the clock. Didnt pay over 6k on any of em one was 4.5k, the runner was 6k. Rant over!

I know, my DC has it. But I didn't know at the time and it was very weird having a floppy TB butterfly when I was reinstalling the engine. I also got into my truck for very little, with very high miles. I haven't really liked the 2nd gen trucks will enough to drop that kind of money on them. I might sooner pay a bit more than I should for a 1st gen 4runner or even a FJ60. The newer Tacoma's feel a little disconnected to me.

More of what I was getting at is the desirability of the 1st gen DC, and why it still fetches good money for a clean example.

And bry838, that is really a good thing for you since you already own one. Holding resale is based on the market, like a home. If your neighborhood is desirable, the homes are more expensive. It's the way it is. I paid $4000 for an 89 4Runner when I had wrecked my old Explorer. I needed a road worthy truck and there were literally no Toyota's (2WD or 4WD) for sale locally and I got wrung by the seller. However that truck was dope and I thoroughly enjoyed it. With all of the frames that have gone bad, if you want one the pool is much smaller now. And that drives up the price.

@2scars The whole frame issue really has sucked, i wonder what tje market would be like if we had bullet proof frames and thousands more trucks still on the road?
