$2500 can’t be right?! (Dealership repair quote)

Over the last week, the U-joints and center bearing on my truck have deteriorated very quickly. It’s a 2007 DCLB with 195k, so it’s time to replace them. Heavy rumblestrip vibration throughout the whole truck while accelerating, bearing squeaks and clanks around, decent play when grabbing and shaking the driveshaft, etc. I’m confident that I just need the center bearing and u-joints replaced. The dealership quoted me $2500 for just the center bearing alone, and all the local shops I’ve emailed/called say they won’t accept customer-provided parts (I’m buying OEM replacement parts myself). I’d do the repair myself but my HOA will have an aneurysm if they see me wrenching in my driveway to that extent.

Surely $2500 for just the driveshaft center bearing is excessive, right? I was willing to pay a handful of dough for the convenience, but not THAT much. Not to mention the dealership insists on charging their diagnostic fee even though I don’t want them to “diagnose” anything per se. I suppose there probably isn’t much I can do about that though.

I'm thinking they are replacing the entire drive shaft, there was a TSB for that issue and I don't think they can replace the center support bearing without replacing the entire thing.

    Yes
that is not correct, the carrier bearing is easily replaced and so are the u-joints.

op - just go to a local driveline shop and let them provide the parts it should only be $500 for everything

Call Tom woods drive shaft. My CB went bad 2x and did a u joint or 2. The tom woods shaft replaces the bearing with a 1 piece shaft

Just tell the hoa to engage in the act of self-fornication and fix it yourself.

    Cost could be correct.

Labor is $125/hr in this area. I was quoted minimum 8 hours for the work. Then parts. Then tax......

    If they replace the driveshafts......

Suggest a DIY in your garage (close the door so HOA can't see) or driveline shop. Front shaft drops out with just 8 bolts, rear has 10 bolts. Easy to drop, take the shafts to the shop.

I chose the DIY path. Took me 9 hours.

You are correct sir, the center support bearings can be replaced. Parts for the u joints and center support bearing should be around $500, just trying to figure out where the hell the rest of the money is going, $2000 for labor is insane.

Remove the driveline quickly in driveway, find a machine shop to swap the u joints and bolt it back up. Doubt Karen will even notice you working on it.

Buy this for ~$500 and swap it in yourself (12 bolts)? https://driveshaftstore.com/Toyota-Tacoma-Driveshaft-2013-156530 Do it in a Walmart parking lot if your HOA objects.

HOA’s ban you from working in your driveway? I’d be doing it at night or find a new place to live

Dealers, pfffttttt. Take it to a reputable shop. $2500.00 for the center bearing alone is ridiculous.

HOA's are nothing but living in a place where you give up all your rights to live your life.
    Sorry, off topic!!

If you've got the skill and the space. Do it yourself in your garage. Sounds like you do because of your initial comment.

Good luck and keep us posted

Personally, I would DIY and chance it with the HOA. Any HOA fines will likely still be cheaper than any shop install.

I'd say drop it wherever you can. With the Ebrake on of course.

Put it in 4wd hi and drive around fwd for a day or 3, and drop the ds off to be repaired.

They'd love me starting the outboard before going out and when coming back to make sure it's running ok and to rinse it out after.

2500 dollar quote is because toyota will only replace the entire driveshaft assembly.

Replace all of mine about 5 years ago, parts where under 200 bucks. Some quality time with my vice on the bench and we are back on the road in under 3 hours.

You sure the quote was just the driveshafts support?? I find that very hard to believe. I put a oem driveshaft in for my father in-laws 08 taco which I inherited not to long ago and the shaft was 800.00 …. Truck has over 400,000 miles on it now.

sounds about right. Doesn't mean you have to pay that. I don't. It's called choices.
We can both pay Jeeves the Butler to spoonfeed some Chex Mix at 8AM for $4k. If you'd like to do that, it's totally your prerogative.
