I've seen the thread about the largest size without a lift but hear me out:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/largest-tacoma-tire-sizes-on-stock-suspension.67550/

Supposedly the (31.7") 235/85R16 fits without issue (16" wheel). It seems many aftermarket 16" wheels don't fit the 2nd gen Tacoma due to the brake caliper and just try to find aftermarket 16" wheels narrow enough for skinny tires so for aftermarket wheels I suppose 17" is the way to go.
Supposedly the (31.6") 265/70R17 also fits with only slight rub / trimming, if any. That must be due the width of the tire, not the height.
The (32") 255/75R17 is only slightly larger diameter than both of those but narrower than both the 265/75R16 and 265/70R17 that are so popular.
So it stands to reason that to some degree, sacrificing tire width can buy increased tire height.
    How much?
Can anyone confirm that 255/75R17 will absolutely fit with only minor trimming/melting and possible removal of those mud flaps in front of the front tires?
I can't help but think this size would be more popular if it was as simple as that.
Also, assuming a 17x8 wheel, does anyone know what backspacing would be recommended? I want the tires tucked into the fenders but not rubbing anything.
    Thanks.

I have the Goodyear Duratracs in that size with around 3" of lift and 1.25" spacers on the stock TRD Sport rims which I believe are either 7" or 7.5" in width with 5.5" backspacing and I can't remember the offset.

Honestly, I wouldn't attempt to fit this size tire without any lift. I did not have to trim anything, only remove the front flaps. But I still get rub on the rear of the front wheel wells during some tight turns and that's with caster pretty high at about 3.25 degrees.

Regarding wheel backspacing, check out my post in this thread that shows how the tires look without spacers on the stock rims. If you want this size tire and don't want them to stick out past the fenders, I'd say try to stay close to the stock 2012 TRD Sport rim specs.

I've all but given up on this size and here's why:
    Weight.
The 255/75R17 Cooper S/T Maxx weighs in at 55lbs. That seems about right for their other tires in that range of sizes but those other sizes are load range E and so have that super durable sidewall that people buy these tires for.
However the Cooper S/T Maxx in the 255/75R17 flavor is load range C and that usually means less sidewall durability or at least less weight. So it seems as though with this size the driver pays the weight penalty without the benefits.
    Thoughts?

There are several aggressive tires in this size in the upper 40lb range in c load. I am looking at the Yokohama G003 in particular which I believe is 48lbs.

I also believe cooper has the same sidewall construction in the c and e load.

They won't fit. And if they do it'll rub and there will be no room for the wheel to go. I have them w/ 2.5" of lift.

If that's true that's awesome and they should advertise that fact.

I think they will fit just fine, and if there's rub it will be on the mud flaps or some other plastic bits that are easily trimmed.

I had 265/70r17 on stock suspension and after removing the mud flaps it never rubbed.

Now I have M55 in 255/85r16 which measure at 33.4x10.4 and they don't rub with a 2" lift.

Granted both of my sets of wheels have less offset than factory but with a narrow tire you should be fine.

I have 255/75/17 Hankooks Dynapro AT mounted on SCS Ray10s with 2.25 lift.
I had to remove that small flap thing in front of tire.

I’m running them stock, no lift, with minor rubbing at full lock and flex. No mud flaps on FJ 17” wheels.
