Just did this today! 255/80/17 st maxx. Rides great, no rubbing and rides smooth
I did the 5100 w/ 885 in front and deaver AAL in the rear.

I just got back from discount tires store. They said they go do the 255/80r17 on my 17x9's. I asked if he thought it would be safe and he pulled a chart that showed 9" was the max for the tire and said it would be fine. Now, if you were to air them down to 15psi for off-roading that could be an issue. I thinking about doing it for now and possibly change out wheels later on.

I have 8.5s, haven't even aired down yet but the first time I do I'll be keeping a very close eye on everything

Anyone have any experience airing down 255/80r17 on a 8.5" wheel? The wheel I like most is 8.5" but I am worried about if I ever have to air down. May go with 8" to be safe...

Down to 20psi on the beach is as low as I've needed to go

    I don’t think 255 is wide enough on a 17x9 wheel. :)

I'll be going same tire size and have my reservations of airing down on my 8.5 wheels. I'll likely be getting new wheels too to play it safe and not have to compromise.

Looking to hear the same. As I already am stuck with a 9” rim. But the only decently priced Yokohama geolander in Canada is a 255/75/17.

    Mostly stock...... For now.
Just ordered my 255/80r17 Falken Wildpeak ATs with 17x9 wheels. As soon as I get them I will post some photos. Called a few shops and said they will fit fine. Bitch to mount but will be safe and guaranteed. Airing down low will be the only issue but I'll likely only ever go down to maybe 29psi.
