Yes they will clear from personal experience, but I have a 2in lift. The reason they clear is because the stock rims are a narrow 7inch rim width. If you are planning to lift your truck, then the stock wheels with this tire size will look tall and tippy. I know from experience. So I decided to go with a 1st gen tacoma/tundra wheel (4.75 backspacing and same 7in rim width) because the extra 1/2in backspacing brings the stance out and looks perfect IMO with no trimming necessary. Good luck.

Thanks! That's really good to know. I have already put on a 3" lift, looking at the stock tires it needs something bigger to fill the wheel well now. This project has to be done in steps, unfortunately. I was concerned about the tall and tippy look but at the same time want to avoid the stance where the tires sit outside the flares. At least now I know I could fit them without needing to do the tires and wheels at the same time.

I'm considering LT255/80R17 Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx for running during the winter months (hunting season). I know a lot of people re-gear, but is it bad on the transmission or anything else if you don't. I'll be mostly flat highway driving when I'm not off road. I really don't want to re-gear, because I will probably run different tires in the summer.

You'll be fine without regearing. I rock crawled mine all over on 3.73's for a while and it was fine. There are several guys still running 3.73's with 35's without issues.

As mentioned previously you should be fine for your use. I have 4.56 gears to put in my axles when I get the time and $$ to coincide. But I have a good amount of weight over stock and hate it when the automatic trans shifts down to 5th at the slightest incline. Fuel mileage already blows, so I may as well have the power back!

I'm looking at the Cooper S/T Maxx tire. Any reason why a load C LT255/75R17 would weigh more than a load E LT255/80R17. The C load tire (53lbs) is smaller and has less plys the the E load tire (51lbs), but yet still weighs about 2 lbs more. What am I missing??

    Thanks Guys

Um... Made out of a heavier material:notsure: Load range doesn't necessarily mean strength or weight. It is a tires ability to handle a lot of weight without being destroyed. Back in the bias ply days they usually added extra plies to the tire making the sidewalls both stiffer and heavier. Nowadays it's all engineering.

I'm sure you are right. From other tires I've looked at the weight usually goes up as size and ply increase, but I guess I haven't looked at two this close in size. oh well...I was hoping it was a mistake, but I finally found another place that stated the same weights.

Load range and ply count are different things nowadays as well. I'm pretty sure that all KM2's are 3 ply sidewalls but they come in Load Range C and E (and possibly even D).

Just saying, the military does NOT use skinny tires on its vehicles any more. Just got out last week, Hmmwv (humvee) are using 37 inch wranglers that have 12.5 inch tread. Not skinny by any means. And the sizes go UP width and height wise the heavier the vehicle

Yep. Although the height to width ratio makes them look skinny. Most people seem to run 33x12.50's and 35x12.50's on their street rigs anymore so putting a 37x12.50 next to them will make it look skinny. I've always felt like 37x12.50's look skinny anyway.

Proportionally for a vehicle that is as big and heavy as a Humvee those are in deed skinny tires not wide.

Whats the weight of a packed Humvee?

In the end the only way to compare real world data is how much weight is dispersed over the contact patch of the tire.

Curb weight of a non up-armored version is just under 6000 lbs. The up-armored versions come in just over 12000 lbs though:eek:

And a taco is around 3900... so... a Humvee is still using skinnys IMO.

Good point, never thought of it that way! Just got excited when I could use my mil experience as a way to throw my two cents in! Little didn't I know it was an ignorant comment hahaha!

Also, the last time we put a combat load in our truck, we were pushing just over 16000 pounds

I run the Cooper S/T 255/85/16 Load range D. Did some landscaping at my parents house in Pittsburgh area. Loaded with 1500 lbs of limestone and the 2000 lbs of block. I have the tow package and the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags with the Daystar cups. Inflated to 58psi as the compound is pretty soft. The plys definitely help when cornering.

4wd double cab 2nd gens come in at about 4300lbs from the factory. With all the shit I have added I am pushing 6K when I go wheeling and I'm running 255's. haha Thus my point a few days ago about not going below 20 psi when wheeling because I get plenty of tire flex.
I'd believe it. Just putting 5 fully loaded guys in a humvee is adding around 1500lbs to it. Plus the crewserve weapon, extra ammo for it and all that other shit. You'd add that extra 4K pretty quick.
