Isn't that essentially what siping does ? Make large tread blocks into smaller individual ones ?

    No.

See the Duratrac pic he posted above the KM2 - that's a sipped tire.

Maybe BFG is considering the couple split tread blocks sipped...? lol

I always considered a sipped tire to have grooves in the tread, but not separating the tread like the KM2's have. They have no internal lug sipping - they just separated a couple lugs and I don't consider that sipping.

I am by far no pro at tire info.... I know more about slicks for my old Mustang then I do MT's and At's.

A sipe is a slit in the tread. It allows the tread to kind of fold out under pressure so it has 5 little biting edges instead of just the outside of the tread block.

Having one groove in the middle of the tread block that is 1/4" across is not sipping. Look at the picture of the Geolander I posted for an example of siping vs just having smaller tread blocks.

EDIT: Also it is siped, not sipped. Sipped is what I did to my beer because it was too warm. Siped is what I did to my KM2s to make them kick ass in the winter :D

Are you guys suggesting that siping the middle of an M/T could make them better daily drivers? More like an aggressive A/T?

And how much does siping a tire cost?

Alright. It's new tire time. Down to either BFG KM2's in a 255/85/16 or AT's in 265/75/16. Went to the local tire shop this afternoon and they have both in stock. Quoted installed prices are $1059 for the KM2's and $985 for the AT's. Price difference is negligible so, is the performance of the 255/85's that much better than the 265's? I've got a mostly highway 30 mile commute to work and try to get out and hunt every few weeks. (Less now with a girlfriend, but she does buy me stuff for the pickup!) I'm thinking that the 255's would actually be better mileage wise as well because of the gearing, but the AT's will last longer. It's a toss up though.

You are going to get quite a bit more height out of the 255, similar weight due to the narrowness, better offroad performance according to me and expedition west and others, who knows about milage.

Stupid question but if your comparing an AT to a MT your doing it wrong. They are two totally different beasts and with as much on road driving as you do a MT would be a waste of $$ IMO. Get an aggressive AT and be done. I don't understand your toss up.

If you want a MT to wheel with get another set of cheap used stock wheels and have 2 sets of tires.

The problem with what you're saying is, the KM2 kicks ass on the road. It is just as quiet as any AT (in that in makes almost no additional road noise).

So if he wants to maximize the time he DOES spend off-road, even with all his on-road miles, I don't see a problem getting KM2's.

So they will last for 50k on road like most AT's? That's not what I have heard from the local guys I wheel with when it comes to theirs. They are also E load so they are going to give a harsh ride on road compared to a C load AT.

BTW - the KM2 255/85/16 will be my next set of tires, but they will be mounted to steel wheels and for 4x4 trips only. I will continue to drive my AT's during the week.

That's what I did. Still run the stock steelies with Dungflops for now (till they wear out, then they'll be replaced with an AT) for my 280 mile/weeK commute. And I put on the 255 KM2s on 1st Gen TRDs when it's time to wheel.

Not sure if they will quite last as long as an AT (but I bet it is close), but unless it wears out twice as fast buying 2 sets of tires is going to cost more than buying 1 and having it wear out a little earlier.

Hell I siped my KM2s all the way across and no signs of increased wear yet.
