How much/what kind of lift? I'm at about 2.25 up front with a brute force bumper / 5100. Want to run this tire and worried I don't have enough lift

Icons up front with 700# springs. I've got them cranked up to about 2.75" of lift. These tires are actually on the small side for a 255/85. 32.8" I think. I don't have a cab mount chop but these tires have not rubbed with my setup. I have them mounted on stock 16" alloys off of a '01 4runner with spidertrax 1.25" spacers.

190 pages to this thread...made it through 40. I appologize for the question that probably has been answered a dozen times, but I have not seen it yet.

What is the minimum lift I need to run 255 85 16s? Would leveling suffice? I need tires now but have not had a chance to level out the front end that I have been meaning to do.

from alot of what i've read here they can actually be fitted with no lift. i have 2.5 in the front and 3 in the rear with 255/80/17's same size just 17" wheels i have more than enough clearance but i can only speak as to what i have experienced

I've been able to satisfy myself that they will fit using stock 2011 offroad alloy wheels with no to minimal rubbing and no lift.

Any downside to using these tires on a daily driver, stock truck? I'll admit it would be ricey for a DD, but it's sweet looking.

I have the ST Maxx; 255/85. I can say that it is really a great tire that performs very well in lots of conditions. I prefer the profile of the Cooper over the BFG or Toyo. I will say that I will be going back down to 265/75 when the ST Maxxs wear out (gonna be a long time it seems). They ride nice, but at highway speeds >50 I get an aggravating sway that I can contribute to the tires. Its tolerable but it makes it where I have to fight the truck more than I feel like I should have to. YMMV. The BFG, Toyo, and Maxxis probably don't do it, and I would would move to one of those options but I want the power back. The 265/75 just seemed to work well for me. Some great looking rigs in here though:thumbsup:

Got it - so would a fair conclusion be with the good looks come reduced MPG and reduced straight line stability.

Possibly. Like I said, you may not have the issue if you were to get a set. There are guys in the ST Maxx thread that don't have the issue like I do. I do know that if you read some of the reviews of the ST Maxx on Discount Tire, you'll see that guys with big 3/4 ton trucks also mention the issue. Really it's all subjective. What I think is instability may seem normal/just fine to you. Also, it's not the size of the tire, it's the actual tire model I do believe. I don't have a sway bar, but didn't have one with my last set of tires. The instability/wandering was the first thing I noticed when I bolted up the ST Maxxs and took them for a spin.

Auto tranny will be hunting for gears if you're doing a lot of hills because the tire height throws the gearing off. And goes without saying you will lose some MPG.

    That's about it

I run the ST Maxxs too and they do have a little more "squishy" lateral movement than the 285/75 I ran before. I also have no sway bar. I believe it's because of the taller sidewall. I like the way the 255s feel. If I ever decide to change sizes it'll be to 35s.
