    So , I guess I'm confused

Are you reffering to 10 sidewall plies ?

I believe what he is saying is that in the olden days a "10 ply" tire had 10 cotton plies in the sidewall. Whereas our modern tires might be rated "10 ply" but only have 2-3 plies in the sidewall.

OK, I know everyone here is going to be biased in the answer towards 255 and I have read the supposed benefits of 255 over 285s and such.

My concern is the lack of tires for 255's. I am looking for a good sturdy MT like the KM2 or MTR. My choices currently are the KM2 in 255/85-R16, KM2 in 285/75-R16, or MT/R in 285/75-R16.

The KM2's there is only .2" in height and 3 pounds difference between the tires, the big difference comes in the tread width. 10" vs 11.3" and the MT/R's are the same as the KM2's. This all comes from the manufactures websites.

I am currently running FIERCE ATTITUDE MTR Tires, I really love them and they have held up amazingly but they are getting worn and I am looking to replace them with either the KM2 or MT/R's. I only rub at extreme flex, I have done the cab mount chop, pinch weld mod, high clearance fenders, and my fender flares are about to be removed and fenders either clearanced or just ran without flares.

I have read the ups and downs of both the tires, the MT/R's seem to be a better all around tire, especially in the rain/snow but they dont come in 255.

So basically I want to know 255 vs 285 and KM2 vs MT/R?

    POOP

285's suck and so do Goodyears

get some 315's and wrap them with Nitto NT05's. Best tire out there for your use by FAR.

And your basis for this what you have read or first hand experiance, because i highly doubt you run them on your x-runner!!! (Although I would pay money to see that)

Ya. If tirerack is anything to go by, it falls way behind in the KM2 in some areas, and a bit behind in others.

It rates particularly bad in Ice traction, Road noise, and Treadwear. Falls behind the KM2 quite a bit in Ride Comfort, and Cornering Stability too. Ahead of the KM2 in no areas.

Never had one myself though. All I know is the KM2 wears like iron, gets amazing traction in all conditions, has never hydroplaned on me, and 255 fits on a 3" lift with no other mods or chops.

    Good luck!

RelentlessTaco has a 1st gen w/ 35 KM2s, I have 315 ATs. Our friend Kolt had an older toyota with 33" baja claws. Eric, Kolt, and I all went out together. We hit this steep hard packed snow dirt road. Kolt clawed his way up with difficulty, Eric was sliding sideways, and every other which way. I honestly thought he was messing around, I pulled up next to him, easing out my clutch in 2wd and asked what he was doing. He had it in 4 and thought I was locked up. I told him I was still in 2wd. I walked right up that hill in 2wd hardly spinning a tire.

I know we're comparing BFG KM2s and BFG TA KOs but I was amazed that he was having as much trouble as he was, he had a lot of life left in those tires but they just wouldn't do much.

    We were all aired down.

I'm not saying MTRs would have done better but honestly I suspect they would have.

Unfortunately with both tires I only have spectator experience so take it for what it's worth, just like most tire reviews.

Personally I'd like a set of Kanati Mud Hogs.

Just put the KM2 255/85/16's on this morning. Replaced my 30 day old 285 Cooper STT's. So far, MUCH quieter and smoother than the Coopers. We'll see how they do off road this weekend.
