Np! I figured some of the 255 guys would be interested to see the comparison.

FWIW I've heard Toyos always run a little bigger than their specs indicate. I should have rolled it out and put it next to my 285's...then I bet it would have looked more like a true pizza cutter.

yeah the 255 should be a tad bit taller than the 285. Ive put my worn out 255/85 cooper st spare up against my 33/10.5/15 and the worn down cooper is the same height as the brand new 33/10.5 km2

What are the main differences going to be for running a 255/85 load E vs Load D or C?

    ^^^^^^^
I think this is the answer...

    Load range E = 10 ply

    Load range D = 8 ply

    Load range C = 6 ply

Atleast this is what I've seen the trend is when comparing different load ranges. Also, the more ply the heavier the tire.

    that would be 1/4" taller...

    diameter / 2 = height difference

Probably. 285's are small. My 255's make 285's look like stock tires.

    Weight capacity and ride comfort.

The more weight capacity the stiffer the ride.

No such things. That chart explaining plys was good 50 years ago but not today.

You find me a new off the shelf brand name 255/85/16 tire meant for a truck that has 10 plys and Ill send you $100.00 when I get home tonight.

Ply is an ancient term used in the wagon wheel days. These days the most plys you will get is three with a typical E load tire.

No one should ever equate load "E" with 10 ply any longer. "E" only refers to weight capacity.

Is something like the Toyo M55 just have the "10 ply" designation because it is E rated and is not truly 10 ply? Or did I just get $100...?

So I see that in the LT chart, it still says "E Rating - 10 Ply".

Why do they still even put this "ply rating" if LT tires only have two to three plies like the Tire Rack link says?

Marketing I'm sure. They can do it because in the fine print it will say "10 ply equivalent" and some people will see it and really think they are 10 ply and 10 ply sounds way better than 3 ply.

I though bias ply tires still follow the 6, 8, and 10 ply thing though? Interco still makes a lot of Bias ply tires and they rate them as ply count and not so much load range on their site.

Same reason terms like 1/4 ton and 1/2 ton pickup still exist. They make no sense anymore, but people are stupid and get hungup on terminology.

thats an almost impossible question to answer. in all seriousness do you think any of us have ridden in the same truck with the same weight and different load tires made by the same manufacturer?

Makes sense. Just did a search and the tires I have now are E anyways, so if I went 255/85 in E it couldnt be too bad.

The tires are 1/2" taller. They give you 1/4" more ground clearance.
