I understand what your saying but why do tire companies still put the "ply #" after stating the load range.... Here's another example

    http://m.tirecrawler.com/shop/result_tire/

It's seems to common not to be related. I have 6 ply, C rated km2's and I had 8 ply, D rated cooper st's. Then not to mention all the research I've done previously and seeing so many tires that follow this trend. Not sure who or what to believe :notsure:
But all I can go by is what the tire manufacturers and distributors post as their specs, which seems to be what I stated in my earlier post

Your tires DO NOT have six separate plys thus the term "6 ply" is total utter BS and should not be used. It's pretty easy to understand so I do not get your confusion around it.

All KM2's are 3 PLY regardless of rating. From BFG's website "three-ply polyester construction".

I think they are just using the old ply rating as an equivalent since some people understand the ply rating better. My E rated km2s clearly state they have a 3 ply sidewall on the side.
    edit: i was too slow.

Yeah but what your focusing on is the sidewall only. They are also talking about the tread ply. My KM2's are STAMPED on the tire... 3 polyester, 2 steel, 1 nylon. Also states 3 ply sidewall.

The initial discussion was about choosing a load rating. The ply rating of the tread has virtually nothing to do with the load rating, thus we are discussing the sidewall.

I just checked and my E rated KM2's say 3 polyester + 2 steel and 3 ply sidewalls on the side of them.

Stacking plies refers more to the older designed tires. Radials tires are built a lot different.

Doesn't seem logical. The entire tire has to be incorporated when determining load range. You can't have a E rated sidewall and then have the tread equivalent to that of a P rated tire and call it E rated. The tread has to be just as thick or thicker to help handle the load/ pressure to the sidewall.

Not sure what you are questioning. Tread will always be thicker. You drive on it and it is a wear item.

The diagram I posted shows the exact construction of the tire in question.

Treads and sidewalls are handling completely different types of loads/stresses. I'm no tire expert but I would bet many dollars that the strength of the tread plays an insignificant role to the load rating of the tire. Mainly because the tread is almost certainly always going to be of a much stronger construction than the sidewall. Just look at the specs people have mentioned, 5/6 tread plies (plys, plis, pli ??) vs. 3 sidewall plies for an E rated tire.
