It seems the 255 70, 75, 80 & 85 R17 and the 255 70R18 off-road tires make a whole lot of sense for better traction, mileage, tire price and to accommodate the low offset wheels for the 4th Gen currently on the market. Maybe also 235s and 245s?

Post you pics, please note your 1) tire sizes, 2) whether E load or SL rated, 3) wheel offset and 4) mileage (before and after). Front, back and side pics are the best

All those sizes seem smaller than stock sport and OR tires. Why would someone want a smaller tire?

Some women 1) equate smaller tires with larger johnsons. 2) they won't drive by and stick their hand out the window doing the "inch" thing with their thumb and index finger.

Seriously, maybe one should drive the biggest tires possible to keep that type of beach away!!!

That said, I'm not sure there is a whole lot of benefit in dry conditions and snow with thicker tires, for traction. Plus the other benefits I mentioned. Like tire weight and rolling resistance.

    I saw a 255 85R17 on a 4th Gen that I thought looked the best on a Tacoma. Better than a 285....

    A 255 70R18 is 32 inches in height and 10.2 inches wide.

    A 265 70R18 is 32.6 in height and 10.7 inches wide.

I ran 235/85/16 on my 3G. I like the pizza cutter look, it looks old-school mil-spec.

I think 255/85/17 is the sweet spot for the 4G.

You hit the nail on the head. The problem with 18" wheels is the largest I can find is 255/70/18s.

I ordered a set of five Falken Wildpeak A/T4W in 255/80/17 right before they went up $25 (tariffs?) on all the tire websites. They arrived today. I ended up passing on the Mickey Thompson Bajas in 255/85 because the Falkens were a lot cheaper and have better on-road manners in all the reviews.

I think I can live with "merely" 33 inch tires. Stock BFGs are 31.5" I think. Will post pics once they're mounted!

I have two sets of wheels/tires. These were around 16mpg. The SL 285/70/17s I’m running now are around 20mpg

The MTs can be had for $312/ea.

Installed some Falken Wildpeak AT4W in 255/80/17 on the stock Offroad wheels. These are E-rated with 3-ply sidewalls. So far they're great. Incredibly, they're just as quiet as the stock 265/70/17 BFG Trail Terrain which is a much more street-oriented tire. I'd say the Falkens are grippier on the road, too. They are a quite a bit heavier than stock and I believe the rolling resistance is higher, so together the MPG has taken a small loss of 1 mpg or so around town and maybe 2 mpg on the highway.

When unloaded, I run them at 38 psi front, 32 psi rear. At that pressure they are almost as comfortable as the BFGs. If you go any higher they get harsh; any lower seems to increase the rolling resistance dramatically.

I also replaced the compact spare and discovered that a 33" tire just barely fits with about 5mm of clearance on the panhard bar.

    Overall, good pick.

How do the E Load's ride on the 4th Gen? I was considering this size when my new wheels arrive. Genuinely curious.

I am running the Mickey Thompson 255/85 17. It works at full lock and at complete compression with absolutely no rub ever and believe me I’ve tested it. The road noise is super minimal. The road grip is phenomenal. Whipping the Truck around corners and over curbs so far it’s one of the better tires I’ve ever run for a truck.

I don’t run wheels outside the fender wheels on my Porsche and see no need to throw rocks at the cars behind you just to look cool. makes no sense to me

Skinny tires also throw rocks behind you. Rocks on asphalt don’t care what width your tires are. aesthetics is one of the top reasons I chose the 4th gen over the 3rd gen the front and rear fender flares and humps give the 4th gen a very muscular aesthetic appearance and slapping on a skinny tire on this wide truck looks weird to some people. While others I guess don’t care proven in this very thread.

In all actuality, at 11.3 inches wide I wouldn’t call them skinny per se. But I actually use my truck to go off road and rubbing the tires on your fender is counter-intuitive to off road performance. Nothing worse than hearing the chunking of rubber tearing apart your own vehicle because of tire selection.!

I respect your opinion, I use my truck for more than just going down to the grocery store or the shopping mall.

I have no problems with how individuals use their trucks. Historically, trucks were only used as work vehicles but fast forward to 2025, there are a wider variety of uses for trucks. The tire width has their uses as well with traction.

I’m only commenting on here because of what you wrote about having poke on tires visually to only look cool seemed negative. I’m one of those with 2” of tire poke on my off road trim. On the flip side I could easily install bigger fender trims to hide the poke if I wanted but the tires are still wider than 255. If someone is using their trucks for mall crawling so be it. Who are we to judge them since they are the ones making the car payments and not us.

This is a thread that does not celebrate poke. We're talking about 255-width tires.

Agreed. They seem pretty meaty for a 255

11.3” though!!? I’d have to measure mine again
