I don't think diesels are any more reliable than gas motors these days, they are way to complicated and expensive to fix with all the emissions BS they have to have.

On paper the 1500 Ecodiesel ticks off a lot of wants and needs. But I won't own a Chrysler/Fiat product. Ram's score in the top 10 of most expensive vehicles to maintain.

Gotta get the older pre smog Diesels those are the ones that will last forever. Get one with 200k on it and your getting a truck that's barely broken in

That eco diesel is nice I drove one the other day for work and talked with the owner for a while. Says that engine has been same engine for almost 30 years. It was just used in boats not cars. They brought that engine on the road and it's supposed to be amazing idk though

Yeah the newer Ecodiesels off the line have corrected a lot of the early issues but the Ram 1500 is still somewhat suspect IF you believe the reports from 3rd parties. It seems like it's usually small things that go on the Dodges. For me it was always front end issues and powertrain problems behind the engine. Kind of like the rest of their lineup they just don't seem to age well.

It's a VM engine that's been around Europe for about a decade. The problems that were common off the bat were with the emissions system which is unique to North America. Fumes in the cab and codes up the ying yang that would throw the engine into limp mode constantly.

VM is known for making shitty diesels, comparatively speaking, much like international.

100% correct. You'll pay double for the truck, and the engine will last 400K, but diesels are so complicated today, you'll spend thousands in repairs to all the bolt on components. I have a client that has a landscaping company using all 3/4 diesels. He is in the process of trading all of them out for gas trucks, because of the nightmarish maintenance cost with the diesels. A diesel engine rebuild is $14K, compared to $4K for a gas, if it comes to that. Unless you absolutely have to have a diesel, stay far away. 20 years ago, people bought the Ford powerstroke diesel instead of a half tons, and came out a head. They also got 20 miles per gallon, and were relatively simple engines, and diesel was cheaper than gas. Not the case now. Also back then a half tons got 15 miles per gallon, now they get over 20.

My dad's 2009 F-150 with the old 5.4L and 6 speed auto just rolled 180k this month. Outside of brakes, tires, and oil changes it hasn't seen the dealer since purchase. His 2000 ranger was the same way up until 230k when he Sold it.

It's funny, Ford is right in the middle of testing the new V8 5.0L Ecoboost in their F250/F350/F450 for that reason. They designed it for the Raptor and GT but it looks like they will bring out a torquey version for the Superduty lineup. I've heard it will get 14 mpg on pump gas and put out roughly 700 ft*lbs of torque. It'll be interesting if that hits the market.

Two trucks from the company I work for now just hit 200K. A 2013 and a 2014. Both 3.5L Ecoboost. No problems with either. They are getting traded/bought out this month for new 2017's with the 2.7L Ecoboost.

Think if you treat them right, it will go the distance. Not that new vehicles are simple anymore...do believe staying away from turbos is good for the long term.

Yeah but, those are going for a premium...finding a clean one that hasn't beat on or bro-ed out...is darn impossible.

This is sadly true. If you can find a clean one that hasn't been beat up your looking at about 20k depending on mileage. Bastards

Don't even want to go down the diesel road...you'll just burn money. Makes no sense if you're not towing heavy.

    150.

I have a 2013 F150 with the 5.0 V8 and a 2016 DCSB with the 3.5 V6. I never ever trailer or haul with the Toyota. The Toyota is 6500 or 6800 lb tow rating and the Ford is 7800. I've trailered 7000 behind the Ford and knew it was there but it trailered fine. I would never trailer anywhere close to the max limit with the Toyota. I had about 3000 behind it once and it pulled like crap.

Hell, the diesel doesn't get much better than that. Sounds like a great idea Ford. They are so far ahead of Chevrolet engine technology. I can see the GM guys laughing it up in their office when they found out Ford's plan for the future was v6 engines in their trucks. "Hahahaha, nobody is going to buy trucks with v6 engines! Hahahahahah". O wait...

I looked hard at that engine and truck when I bought my Tacoma. I have a client that has one and loves it. He says he gets 28 miles per gallon. I just couldn't pull the trigger on a Fiat truck, and the complexity of todays diesels kept me away. I had a 14 Chevy Cruze diesel I traded for my Tacoma. Under warranty, I had to pay $320 because it didn't re-gen on it's own like it's supposed to, and clogged the particulate filter. Never again. Had 2 VW Jetta diesels years back before all the emissions regulations, and they were great.

If you're going to keep it till you run it into the ground, get the more reliable one. Always go with your

Gut says get underpowered Toyota. That and you just go order one...unlike trying to find the best deal on Ford.

90% of the time it will be great, the other 10% just sit back and enjoy the view. Not much in a hurry these days.
