I first had a regular cab 2014 Tacoma 2.7 with the 5 speed manual. Trailered 3500 lbs once, never again. I worked the living hell out of it and where I'm at there aren't any hills.

Pretty close to mot trail heads here...so day trips most of the time will be under 1300 lbs. with my 5X8 open trailer. That or use my hitch carrier, bike weighs 250 lbs wet. Only take the 5X10 when I camp for a couple days...maybe every 6-8 weeks during riding season if I am lucky. 6-7 times a year???

Used Tacoma prices are so high here that I ended up buying a Frontier. 37,000mi Pro-4x king cab 6spd with a year of warranty left for $20k CAD. You should check them out if you're looking for a solid small truck, I really like it.

That said the Ford still seems like a nice choice all around. The Tacoma would be perfect if it wasn't for the enclosed trailer.

You're pulling a huge parachute. Weight is low but wind resistance will be the killer. I'd think long and hard before going to a 4cyl Tacoma.

My vote would be the Tacoma, I know the towing will not make this the best option. I have many friends that work for ford and have driven fords for many years and they have had problems on all generations. I do not have much personal feedback on the ford truck but this comes from a lot of feedback from the same people that build them. I was told that the v8 is a great motor, I'm sure this is not an option. Mpg might be the same. Haha. Good luck.

Gotta agree with you on the motors. I bought one but only because it was the 302 V8. My Dad has the identical truck but the 3.5 V6. It's a freaking turd. I'm at 85k so far without a single repair. Stock everything less tires.

Not reading the whole thread, but my 2.7 l 5-speed SR towed a 2000# boat and trailer up 1.5 mile hill just fine, hitting 4K RPM at shift points. That's only 1.5 miles, though. The Rocky Mountains are another story. I don't know how much better a V6 non-turbo F150 would do, though. Neither of these trucks are built for hauling at highway speeds through the mountains.

I've owned a 2003 F250, 2005 Tacoma, 2009 F150, and 2016 Tacoma. The F150 had the best build quality, refinement, and capabilities hands down. A lot more room in that cabin, too. But here I am with a 2016 Tacoma because I prefer manual transmissions, and I just don't trust any of the non-Allison auto slushboxes to go the distance. Never want to find out what it costs to replace an 8, 9, or 10 speed auto transmission. If I could buy something configured like my old F250 (rubber floor, vinyl seats, 5.4L, 6sp manual), I'd do it in a heartbeat. Those days are gone.

Long story short: get the F150 as stripped down as you can, don't look back, but save up for your pennies for a transmission.

    Longevity is numero uno.

Could sell it and get something a little lighter and a bit more aero.

Buddy of mine had one of these, you can fit 2 bikes in there, only weighs 575 lbs. Two bikes, 2 gear bags, two 5 gallon jugs of fuel...is roughly 1200 lbs.

Yeah...highly doubt you'll find a 30 year old Tacoma on the road since they are only 21 years old... ;) :p

Tow rating on the F150 V6 is 7200....guessing the power to weight ratio is real close though. The F150 is what 800-1000 lbs heavier than the Tacoma?

Repair bill of the new fangled auto trans kinda scares me...

F-150 all day...they have proven to be super reliable. The new 17s have corrected any DI issues that plague most turbo motors. There are plenty of high mileage ecoboost motors out there. Why not consider the 2.7 ecoboost? Quick, reliable and tows only a few hundred less then the 5.0

More shit to break. Under my thumb, truck will be out of warranty in 3 years. Plan on keeping it 15 years. Don't think you can find a 2.7 eco for $25K either.

It's actually around 400 lbs for the models you are looking at. The F150 shed a lot of pounds with the aluminum body and almost all high strength steel frame.

Thanks. Thought the Taco ACLB 4 banger was close to 4000 lbs, and the F150 SCSB was closer to 5000 lbs. Can't find exact curb weights.

Think the solution to the "problem" is to ditch the enclosed trailer. No reason to base the whole truck purchase on something that gets not much use. Do believe the Tacoma will be cheaper to own in the long run.

If I recall correctly the 2016-17s I-4's have 5 or 6 speed automatic transmissions? You'll be fine towing near capacity with that combo, especially if its less than 200 miles. I dropped from a 6x12 trailer down to a 4x8 and it was much more comfortable to tow around.

The 16-17's are 6 speed autos. I'll do the 5 speed manny though. I recently bought the 5X10 enclosed, also have a 5X8 open trailer which I had for 15 years now, pulling behind my 1st Gen with the 3.4 V6. Also pulled that trailer behind my '92 pickup with the 22RE....So the SR 4 banger won't be that much different than what I already had/have...if it worked for me for these last 15 years....pretty sure it work for another 15. ;)

Solution is selling the 5X10 enclosed. Keep It Simple Stupid, yeah? ;) :)

If your going 5.0 f150 15 years problem free should be no biggie. Either way both good truck that accomplish different things

Should try pulling it before you sell it. Wind resistance might not be much of an issue with a canopy on the bed.
