I now have 1400 miles on my new Taco, But I have slowed down on the urban interstates from a indicated 70 to 65 MPH and my mileage has gone up 1.5 to 2 MPG. Last tank was 26.5. Gas still must not be expensive enough as people are blowing by me like crazy. But they are more people falling in line behind me in the slow lane every day. And today on my 27 mile commute from work I actually had to go by a few big domestic PU's going I would say around 60. I can't imagine paying $4 for 13-15 MPG.

going off of my instant reading of my dashhawk (similar to the scangauge) I ranged from 24-30 mpg by going about 55 mph. I have my doubts about the accuracy of this.

Next week I'm going to start my 30 mile commute and the speed limit there is 60. I should be able to get some fairly accurate numbers with this commute. I might even try removing the tailgate. (And don't tell me about mythbusters.)

i think in Cali, 55 mph is the minimum on the freeway, below that and you would get pulled over. But yeah, i agree 55 is way too slow for freeways in Cali... that is an 18 wheeler speed...

I did a 200 mile trip this weekend (each way) To: I kept it at 60 mph with the cruise on most of the way, and was at 26.1 mpg. On the return trip I was at 65 mph (and a few miles at 70) and got 23.1 mpg.

This is with a calibrated ScanGauge, 4x4, 2.7l with maybe a 250lb load in the bed, AC on and one passenger.

That is a nice mileage, we can get that out of our 4.0V6...... I would drive a Honda civic if I didn't need the Horsepower. They get 35-40!

    I had a 1999 2WD 5 speed 2L I-4 SR5 that got 32 highway.

Also, concerning gas quality, I only put mid grade in my cars becuse even though they are tuned for regular.. reg gives my engines a rough idle. Premium kills my mileage a little and performance goes down. Mid grade increases my mileage slightly, improves performance and smooths the idle. It is better for the engine too.
It may be 10 or 20 cents more a gallon..but think about it. thats like an extra 2-4 bucks or less per tank just to do your vehicle good.

I should buy some beer for this evening. After all, it is Friday.

Edit: What's the big deal? I don't care if it is Monday.

Guys that double nickle speed as we used to call it may just come back here real soon. Not only is gasoline higher priced it is scarce in some places and rationing has already started. The 55 speed way back then was a good measure though to save so much oil per day, just like the Daylight Savings Time saves tons of electricity.

There's rationing in the US???? I'd have thought that would have made national news.

A lot of people think that the tailgate adds drag.....
In fact when you drive an air pocket is formed inside the bed that completely deflects airflow. This has been proven with the use of gauges that measure air pressure, which showed this bubble of stale air. Your tailgate will add drag, however if it is one of those mesh types becuase the holes allow airflow, destroying the air pocket and acts as a parachute to a small extent.

It's science, taking off the tailgate will have no effect on your mileage

no amount of book science will disprove real world tests with the actual vehicle.

I do know that running even slightly over 2000rpms makes a decent difference in mileage. For example, on my way up to NJ last Thurs (570 mile each way), I averaged approx 65mph and got 22.5 mpg. On way back today I averaged about 70 mph (ran 79 mph through the entire state of NC) and got closer to 20mpg. I wouldn't even THINK about going only 55mph on I-95. I'd rather pay the extra couple of bucks.
