265/65r17s to 265/70r17s a bad idea?

    Hey All,
Point me in the right direction if this has been discussed elsewhere - I ordered my new tacoma sport 4x4 6mt a bit ago and I'm thinking about going from the 265/65r17 to 265/70r17. I understand that the speedometer will be off a little and the gas mileage might drop a touch, and the gear ratio changes a bit, but my real question is about the damage (if any) that is being done to the transmission or drive train. So, is there going to be any long-term consequences of bumping up the tire size just that little bit? Can the factory drive train handle it, or is it just not worth the risk?
    Thanks for the help, everyone.

It'll be fine. And your speedometer will be more accurate since they all under report from the factory.

Speedos change by about 3% just from tread wear anyway.

    32in tires are my preference.

    You're welcome!

I didn't notice anything other than actually noticing the slight lift and lower RPMs in 6th.

I went the opposite direction, bought the truck with 54 lb load E 265/70R17s and switched to 39 lb XL 265/65R17s. It was a small but noticeable difference (improvement going in that direction). Mpg got maybe 1.5 mpg better. I don’t think you’ll notice a huge difference. If you have stock mud flaps, you might rub on turns with bumps like into a driveway or parking lot.

Eventually I’m going to step back up an inch in tire size again but I’ll be running skinny 235s that won’t rub and they won’t be super heavy and I’ll be regearing too so overall I won’t experience any of the downsides that made me want to step back to 265/65s in the first place.

I don’t think you’ll hate the outcome though, most people on tacomaworld upsize. the bigger ones do certainly look better.

The same 265/70R17, but on different wheels

So as you can see, huge difference and horribly dangerous to your wallet.

    This helps soo much!

    All,
I ended up doing the trd lift kit and 265 70r17 cooper discoverer at3 4s on the stock sport wheels.

I will post pictures of the truck when it lands (mid November - hopefully)

Thank you all very much! This has been super helpful.

Just picking a nit here..., in the case of both of your options the "Wheel Size" stays the same at 17", it is the tire diameter which will increase by just over an inch.

Yes, that's a typo on my part. I'll change that, thank you.

Do you have stock suspension? Also, what side steps do you have? I like the low profile of a slider, but it looks like you could use them as a step as well

I plus put one tires on my truck. Dealer said, no problem what so ever. It won’t rub, truck will ride smoother over rough roads and acceleration and mileage may take a slight dip all depending on driving habits. A slight loss of handling which the taco has little of to begin with. Overall, it looks better and too small a change to worry about.

Top two pictures are stock. I *think* the bottom was after I lifted one inch on Bilstein 6112s. All these pictures blur my memory. :cookiemonster:

Here, the below picture was definitely 265/70/17, after new wheels, but still on stock shocks.

    PXL_20220415_012513832.jpg

The steps came from the dealership and I never bothered changing them. I think they are called shark boards? They definitely won't hold up if I try to use them as a slider. But they do poke out enough to stop most door dings at the mall, so I kept them.

I almost went the 235 80r17 route, but a lot of that size were "E" rated. I don't need an "E" rated tire. The 265 70r17 cooper discoverer at3 4s's (standard load) that I landed on only tip the scales at 42lbs. Weight was a factor in my decision as well. I will agree; the bigger tires do look better.
    Thanks for your insight!

As far as I know, all of them are E rated. Which I am not excited about, but being skinny means they are not super heavy and the last E's I had did not really ride all that rough. So I can deal with it. 255/75R17 also interests me but it's a bit wider and is officially 32" and I'm concerned about rubbing mud flaps. I don't want to rub the flaps and I refuse to remove them, so I'm kind of stuck on tire sizes. 265/70R17 already rubbed enough in turning on bumps to irritate me enough to change tires.

Hahaha! I totally hear you. The cooper 235 80r17 LT's where only a pound heavier (43lbs) than the 265s i was so close to pulling the trigger, I only didn't because I thought they might ride rough, and with the deeper tread maybe be louder? :notsure: I drive myself crazy sometimes.
