Do you plan on off-roading at all? If so, 285s are great. If not, they're not worth it. The ride is rough, they'll rub a lot (or you'll spend time cutting stuff up so you DO clear) and your MPG will plummet. An aggressive 265 will still look great with a lift.

I'd run 265/75/16's and forget about the lift. You'll save a ton of money now as well as in the future and have about .6" less ground clearance. Trust me, an extra .6" of ground clearance won't get you anywhere off road. If I'm going to the trouble and expense of a lift I'm going for 2-3" more ground clearance.

I had both. Started with 265/75 Toyo RT's prior to the lift. After the lift they didn't quite look right so I just got 285/75 Ko2's mounted. I love them.

I've got 265/75/R16 Toyo MT's on my 2017 TRD Off Road. I will be adding the Icon Stage-3 complete suspension system in a few weeks and calling it good after that...

Put the lift on first and set it to your desired ride height. See how you feel about the looks of the stock tires. A beefier tire will help a little bit, but if you think the look is off with the smaller tires then get the 285s.

When I had my Jeep I went with a 3" lift and 33s at first. I lasted about 1,500 miles before I went to 35s. It just didn't look right. I lost quite a bit of money in that deal. I learned if I am trying to decide between 2 tire sizes, I am going with the larger size. That is just me though.
