So my 265/70x16 KO2s will be dead fairly soon and looking potential replacements. I see NITTO now has a 265/75x16 RidgeGrappler which I like.

Will a 265/75x16 fit in the stock spare tire holder?

Has any driven there Tacoma with three 265/75x16 and one 265/70x16 tire. Seems a little sketchy but maybe such a small increase in diameter would not be unsafe if careful.

    Thanks

It should fit, I believe you can even stick a 285 up the with some modification

It's a minor size increase, so probably would be fine as a spare, and should fit under the bed in the stock location. I have a 265/70 under my bed, and I'm not sure a 75 would fit, but only because of my hidden hitch as there's only about 1/2" between the tire and back of the hitch. Other than my hitch, there's quite a bit of room to fit a larger tire.

As pairodice said, you can probably fit a 285 under there, but it would stick down quite a bit and you'd probably drag it everywhere off road.

If you end up with a 265/70 spare, you'll be fine. Obviously only drive to the nearest tire shop, but it'll get you there no problem. Just look at the tiny donut spares most cars use.

Just get E load rated tires, and you'll probably never have to worry about a flat.

Good advice...thanks. I think I'm inclined to stick with the KO1 265/70x16 for a spare for clearance as mentioned. Also I re-routed the tail pipe section closer to the spare to clear the Dakar leaf. But mostly saves me $220 from buying a spare Ridge Grappler.

Agreed, E rated tires probably won't get a flat. Here my fav pictures going to Funnel Lake south of Mammoth. It was about 3 miles of this sharp rocky trail. Put some pretty good cuts in the sidewalls but nothing to the cords. The trail was so bad the passenger got out and walked it faster. LoL

Thanks, It's an Addictive Offroad bumper. I like it because its a plate bumper that still leaves access to the winch. Does require cutting and welding.

I just put a new tire on my spare last month. It doesn't look like anything bigger than 265/70r16 will fit unless you cut the ears off the carrier.

I've been running 285s for the past 10+ yrs and I personally on't care about about a matching size spare. Only reason I replaced the spare tire cause it was all dry rotted. I've had the truck for 14 yrs & last month was the first time I ever dropped the spare off the truck. Luckily for me I've never had to use it & hopefully still won't but better safe than sorry which is why I replaced the tire.

I have my 265/75/16 up under there. Even with the hitch, it's no problem.

    This is good to know...thanks.

You know you bring up an interesting point. I have no idea how old my spare tire is. It very well could be the original spare. It doesn't look rotted but is quite dry. Maybe I give it a good dousing of Armor All.

Dammit, I should of gone with a 75 then. It fit no problem without modifying the 4 legs of the carrier?

They say tires are only good for 10yrs or so. The spare is under the bed & out of direct sunlight so it may get more years out it. It might not show cracking cause it's not under load but check to see how hard the rubber is.

I got a Cooper STT Pro 265/75R16 on an SCS Ray10 wheel to fit up there. It's tight, but if you just raise it up there slowly and move it around a bit you can make it fit without having to fight it much.

Also, make sure your rear diff has enough clearance for when the suspension compresses. If you keep the tire within the two stock brackets and just have it pushed to the rear a bit it will clear perfectly.

Edit: Oops I didn't realize this was for a 1st Gen. I had 275s on my 03 and kept the stock spare so I'm not 100% sure on this.

That's a pretty snug fit. Did you bend the carrier legs outward or did you need to cut them?

How close is the tail pipe to the tire? I've seen some Chevy trucks that look to have a heat shield between the spare and the tail pipe.
I have thought about adding a heat shield but like many things. It's easier to think about it than do it. :)

I cut off the legs were they bend and my exhuast dumps right after the muffler in front of the axle so it doesnt even come close.
