I have the same tires as the OP. I get the same MPG and the gear hunting has always been terrible in the auto. 265 is a tiny increase in size, really wont affect that much. Think youre just noticing now lol. If E rated 285 then yeah. Which Im going to whenever they come in.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
What’s really gonna blow your mind is if you were to put the stock tires back on it, would probably still hunt for gears at this point.

I have owned 2 3rd gens, and the hunting was there before the tires and upgrades, just not as noticeable.

I wouldn’t say that 265’s were a bad idea, but as you are finding out, they do negatively impact performance and mpg. Stock tires have low rolling resistance and only weigh about 32lbs each. Your 265’s have a higher rolling resistance and weigh 40+lbs. There’s simply no avoiding physics. Your engine will notice the additional rolling resistance and rotational weight. That said, many people like the look of a 265/75/16 and are willing to accept/deny the mpg and slight acceleration loss.

Try owning a 16 before the updates. I hated having 265 75 16. I looked forward to my winter set.

Just a little bit more of my personal experience with my 2007 JK Wrangler (Gear Ratio = 4.10). I purchased the Jeep new in 07. And just traded for the Taco last week. I drive 60 miles round trip to work 6 days a week. So I came to know that vehicle very well. To conserve fuel, I usually drive around 65 to 67 MPH. The Jeep came with 225's and looked like a mail truck when I first got it. And at the speed I usually drive, I was averaging close to ~18 MPG. Well, the 225's looked horrible and had to go. So I purchased my first set of Duratrecs in a 245 / E's. Noticed RPM change around 300 RPM. And fuel economy dropped about 2 MPG. Then, I got the big tire itch, and purchased the Duratrec 265 / E's. I noticed another change in RPM of ~300. And lost another 2 MPG. The biggest issue I had with the 265 is that traveling up the steeper inclines (or even fighting a strong headwind) the Jeep could no longer maintain OD and would down-shift. After about 10 years of driving this "Brick", I decided to quit buying E's, and purchased a set of C's. MAYBE, I got back 1 MPG in fuel economy. I did get back a smother ride. But I still had the down-shifting issue. Working 6, sometimes 7 days a week, I was burning through close to $80 a week in gas. I'm getting close to 24 MPG in my 2019 V6 SR5 4WD. You guys can keep your 265's. I'm keeping this part of my Taco just like it is for as long as I can. Just my $0.02

I'd love a new JL on 37s, I won't lie. The acceleration is still no biggie and I can easily do 80 on the freeway so that's a plus It's a small trade off i guess But im still getting alot better than 14 mpgs lol

A fellow coworker has a 2016 JKU Rubi w/ 3" lift and running 35's (Duratrec Kev's). He does have the Penstar motor (I didn't). He drives the crap out of that Jeep. According to him, he's getting about the same as I was (maybe a little less). He is also talking about going up to 37's. But he said he wouldn't do it without going to 4.88's.

I run the wildpeaks LT265x70x17 10ply at 40psi and since installed I’m getting average of 19.5 MPG love the tires. They are awesome driving on the beach as well.

Speedo is off by about 3-4 mpg so the computer is off too. Do a manual calculation. 50 miles per tank is an extra trip to work for most people. I don’t really se that as significant more like a minor drop.

I'm running heavy ass steel wheels AND 10 ply M/T tires. I average around 16-18mpg.

I did notice some additional gear hunting, but I have found that ETC on and trans in S mode helps quite a bit with this.
