So I'm getting front and rear lockers this month or next month. I'm curious what your guy's opinion is whether I should just put back my 4.30 gears to get 200rpms less at highway speeds. Or just enjoy the increased power from 4.88s, I'm running full steel skids and sliders from rci with 285s.

Before anyone asks, my speedo is calibrated. Also going bigger tires isn't an option for me

Not trying to thread derail, but I'm curious about locking up IFS. I come from Jeep land with straight axles, so I'm not familiar with locking an IFS. I prefer locked front over rear, so I'm curious what the advantages/disadvantages are for locking IFS front over straight axle rear on the Tacoma?

    I'll help you derail.

I was going to do a front arb. But then decided after tons of reading to just leave it and rely on traction control for the front.

Plus I really don't think I'll be taking my Tacoma on something that needs a front locker. I've done extreme stuff (rock crawling comps) and it's not fun.

    And it's 1500 bucks cheaper!

But back on topic. Coming from someone with 35's. Leave it. You don't want to go back to this.

I can almost guarantee if you swapped back you'd hate it. You've already spent money once. Don't do it again.

Unless you are rich and just looking for something to spend money on. :D

You're talking about the LSD up front yeah? I don't have any complaints with the transaction control. I was just asking out of curiosity because the front locker always seemed more useful than the rear on my old XJ.

Pretty sure the Rubicons will not let you lock the front unless the rear is locked first.

I'm a little hesitant to lock the front for a few reasons, one, I don't have a lot of experience with the strength of the CV's, and two, the strength of the Rack & Pinion. From what I've read, the front diff itself is very strong.

Front locker makes slippery surfaces, and lifting a front tire much more controlled and predictable.

Please see exhibit A for reference for traction when front tire is lifted.

The front traction control that pretends it's a lsd.

See I'm opposite. The rear always made the biggest diff for me. But then again I don't plan on doing anything exreme in mine.

But then again again I still have my gears sitting in my garage. So who knows. Maybe I'll do an arb anyway.

I don't think that is very high of an RPM for 75, what fuel mileage are you getting?

This is what I'm talking about. I am pretty sure my Tacoma won't ever see some concrete drainage pipes and little boulders. So I don't need a front arb.

    Plus cv's scare me.
Plus I've seen steering just fold in fold in half with no effort.

17mpg if I drive like a normal person. But I tend to gun it a lot because it feels good.... so 16mpg

It won't be any extra cash since I'm doing lockers my gears will be taken apart anyways. But I do hear ya, I did hate the power before...

I should clarify that I came from old XJ jeep land before super rad ARB's were a thing....poor man auto-lockers FTW. Aussies fuck yeah!

I'm with you, I'm not familiar with the strength/ability of the frontend on the Tacoma. I will say that a locked frontend on the XJ was much more functional than a locked rear. I don't have fancy cool photos to illustrate my point, but I like beer so you should believe me.

Well I don't have a-trac like your manual TRD offroads... That's really where I messed up but arb lockers is cheaper than trading in, and it's an upgrade over the e-locker. Lockable whenever I feel the need.

Call me old school, but I think a locker in front (or rear if you must) is more useful than fancy traction control if money is the concern.

Lockers are going in regardless, my thread was more about my gearing as a concern for my engine life, my old taco was an auto and it got no where near 2700rpms at 75 Mph, which has me concerned

That isn't bad. I wish mine was there. Unless I'm going downhill mine stays in 4th.

    75 I'm sitting at 3500 rpm in 4th. :(
