How is the power and daily drive-ability with larger tires on a Automatic 5 lugger?
    28" and taller. Stock is 26.9" 215/70/15 or 235/60/16 is 27".

I've previously seen some input mainly from the Manual Transmission guys (thanks) in other threads.

My door jam sticker say I have the A01A gearing which is most likely the 3.42 gearing, not the 3.53 some think come in the car. With OE tires that are about 75% tread left, I'm cruising 2,000-2,200 rpm at 65-70mph as of right now.

In my searching for Wheels for this 07 2wd 4banger 5 lugger, I came across a lot of crappy looking wheels and very few wheels I like that are lighter in weight and 7" wide. I impulsed a bit .. .

    What I bought - 16x8 +30 Forged AL 5 spoke Nissan GT-R OEM wheels.
    I was also considering 16x7 or 16x8 +20 Rota Grid V https://www.amazon.com/PCS-ROTA-GRID-WHEELS-16X8/dp/B01EVXFTRK

I was originally thinking that my ideal size would be 225/70/16 - 28.4" diameter. BUT, these tires measure 7" tread width and most are saying they will only fit on up to a 7.5" wide wheel. Tire rack says they don't think it'd be safe. For more athletic tires, I'd run it no prob, but for higher sidewall, probably not a good idea.

Typical sizes for 16s for truck tires are
28.4" = 225/70/16 Typically 6.9-7" wide tread and fit up to 7.5" wide wheels
29" = 235/70/16 Typically 7.1-7.5" wide tread and fit up to 8" wide wheels

28" = 235/65/16 tires which are not popular for trucks. mainly heavy cars and few light SUVs. not many rugged options.

I'm not going to be off-roading much at all. At least no within the next couple years. occasional dirt and gravel roads in Arizona and california to get to MTB trails and camp grounds. Mostly Daily driver in bad traffic type of use. Mall crawling.. .

no one wants to talk about this huh?

    interesting.

My neighbor is a retired Firestone store manager so I might try and get something from there in the spring.

Since these are 8" wide, I've ruled out using 225s as all the truck sizes say 7.5" max width for rim and in searching for pictures, many would look ballooned onto a 8" rim anywas. some 235s will even look ballooned a little as well.

27" 235/60/16 - tire rack shows only 6 options between highway AS, suv AS, AT = Geolandar G015 which might be cool to run but gonna look a little odd a think. Kuhmo Crugen HT51 might be my best option in this size.

28" 235/65/16 as very few truck options - the best Highway AS one I'm considering is the Firestone Destination LE2. the others in this size are super high load rated 121/119R stuff that aint gonna fly on my truck.

29" 235/70/16 - no lack of options here in any category.

My confidence level leans to the 28" Destination LE2. My "Want" level that ignores my truck's auto granny gearing leans to 29" Destination A/T2 or Geolandar G015 or Michelin defender ATX M/S. Kuhmo Crugen would be the cheapest option I'd go with in this size.

Try and pose the question in the 2nd gen forum instead of the 5 lug with a new post. 5 lug section here is p dead sadly, and most 2nd gen peeps can still give u a good answer, some 5 luggers may be lurking on the second gen forum but not on here

I run 235/75/15 cooper discoverer at3. No issues when it comes to power delivery or gearing. Still tows around 4000 with relative ease. The rims I’m using are OEM

Right on. That's good to hear. Thanks for the input. My purchase is a little ways away as I'm doing maintenance things first and possibly looking into a lift and rear end Final Drive change if I can find the parts for the right price. depending on the ratio I find 3.73 or 4.10, I might go even bigger than 235/70/16s to a 30.3" 245/75/16 which is a far more popular tire size for ATs and the most popular 16" size. Would be more readily available if I need something in a pinch.

Iirc the biggest you can go on these trucks without minor mods (blackbox or spacer lift) is 30 or 31 without rubbing. I can’t remember off the top of my head, but don’t exceed it unless you’re willing to slice open the wheel well to remove the black box

If i go with gears and 30+, definitely will lift as well. 2.75/1.75 or less

Leather steering wheel (OE eBay) that came with a cruise stalk, I bought the $38 OE wire to plug into the clock spring, plug and play.
I'll reply, it's right up my alley.
I have an 2008 5-lug 2WD Regular cab with the same door jamb sticker axle code, A01A, which should make the rear gear 3.42 to 1.
I found out quite recently that the truck actually has a 3.73 to 1 ratio. How? See the ** below.

I ditched the stock 215/70/15 26.9 tall wheel and tire combo shortly after I bought it and use one of the 2 following wheel/tire combos depending on the season.
    225/75/16 29.3
tall (7JJx16 ET38 it's a Discount Tire Winter wheel/tire combo I bought on craigslist) or
225/60R17 27.6 tall (Sienna wheels 7JJx17 ET35, this is the Summer set, again craigslist for the wheels, I bought the tires in a good size, not too big, not too small)
Both are taller than stock, the 16' winter tires are 2.4 taller. The performance is a little more sluggish (with them) but it's not bad, it's quite normal if you don't think about it
It never really goes above 2000 rpm during normal around, cruising or driving, if I run it up to 3000rpm I'll be doing 100 mph. I plan on re-gearing it to 4:10 to 1 and throwing in an LSD at the same time. It will not be a drastic change at all.

You can easily see the different gearing RPM and speeds using the link below, that's how I found about my actual gearing.
I knew my speedometer was (and should be) inaccurate because I changed tire diameters. Using the 3.42 to 1 gearing in the equation (link below) gave incorrect speeds to what I observed for a given accurate RPM. Why?
I knew my tire diameter, I knew the engine RPM and I knew my actual speed because I used a Speedometer app on my iPhone.
I plugged in axle ratio numbers till they got closer then I plugged in a known Tacoma OEM axle ratio (3.73 to 1) and there it was, correct RPM and speeds for the speeds and RPM I was checking.
It is a very useful "thing".

what RPM does the taller setup get you running 65-70mph on the highway?

Are you sure that the 3.73 you think you have is not an LSD? maybe it was plucked from a LSD pre-runner.

First things first, I thought, as did you, that my Tacoma (2008 4cl auto Reg Cab) had a 3.42 gear because I found that on the web somewhere.
When the speeds I was observing did not jibe with that I looked further. I found a Toyota published PDF with a bunch of specs, it said 3.58 rear gear, that didn’t jibe either. When I use 3.73 (actually 3.727 in Toyota speak, the program rounds this to 3.73 ) the numbers jibed.

I should have mentioned the transmission ratios are a known also, 3rd =1 to 1 and 4th = .705 to 1, torque convertor locked up.
    I checked (more than a few times) at 2000pm in 3rd and 4th, I get 47mph and 67mph which equates to a 3.73 gear.
If it did have a 3.42 gear it would be 51mph and 73mph.
If it did have a 3.58 gear it would be 49mph and 70mph.

No LSD, no evidence of any differential or axle swap, it was a work truck before I bought it.
I did have a full frame swap, at Toyota dealer, before I bought it and the chances of them swapping diffs on 2 truck they may have had in at the same time are really, really, slim. They swap the whole axle from bad frame to good frame, no need to takeout it apart.
The PDF is in the next post.

    nice PDF!! saved!

I played around with the calculator last night. the numbers look pretty close for the 3.42 and 3.58. I should hookup my OBDII scanner thing and verify my speedo is accurate though.
