Great Thread!!!!!!!!! I've sold a few things on CL and Kijiji and you get scammers trying to buy your shit too, offering to send you cashiers checks, etc, as long as you ship the vehicle "on the truck we will send to your home". I don't know who falls for this shit!

I have certainly enjoyed the read.. I do have to admit that the ebay confirmation email does look pretty legit. You should actually forward that to ebay's fraud department more so than the FBI. It is sad that there are a lot of gullible people out there for these retards to prey on... :(

Speaking of scams, here is one to look out for....

    The Home Depot Scam...

    Here's how the scam works:
    two seriously good-looking 20-21 year-old girls come
over to your car as you are packing your shopping into
the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a
rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of
their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look...
When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say
'NO' and instead ask you for a ride to McDonalds.

You agree and they get into the back seat. On the
way, they start undressing. Then one of them climbs over into the
front seat and starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals
    your wallet.

I had my wallet stolen October 4th, 9th, 10th, twice
    on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th & 29th. Also November 1st & 4th,
Twice on the 8th, 16th, 23rd,26th & 30th, three times last Monday and very likely again this upcoming weekend.
So tell your friends to be careful!

    P:S: ~~Walmart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each,~~I
found cheaper ones for $1.99 at K-Mart and bought them out.

Also, you never will get to eat at McDonalds.
I've already lost 11 pounds just running back and
    forth to Home
    Depot.

I had a scam similar to this one once. It sounded fishy so I googled the email and name and sure enough it pooped up all over the place as a scam. So when they asked for my info I gave them the white house email and address. They politefully accepted (script) and said my paperwork was on the way. Never heard from them after that.

Someone tried to scam me when I sold my truck on CL. I'm not sure exactly how that works. He wanted to send me a check and as soon as it cleared my bank would send a shipping company to pick it up. He never once mentioned what he was buying, just said he wanted my "item" for sale and couldn't come look at it. I got a couple emails from him that said the same thing, as I posted it in a couple different cities near by. Anyone know how this scam is supposed to work? Here's an email I got from him:

Nigerian based money scam... deal with them all the time...

Here's the skinny... your buyer pretends to be sincere, yet not available to complete the transaction in person. He or she may say that they are a pilot... traveling abroad.. or may be in another US state... or a combination thereof.

They will often agree to pay your asking price without seeing the item, which is normally a vehicle, (altho I've seen this on livestock too)... and then send you a very authentic check that is for MORE than your asking price.

They go into this, I'm so sorry for the inconvenience, but I'm still in England... my plane hit a duck... my plane ran out of gas and I had to walk from cloud 9 to Sheetz... I'm being held hostage, well.. you get the picture. They offer up more money and tell you that they have arranged a shipping company to retrieve the item... but they direct you to cash their check, withhold the original purchase price, plus the extra for the trouble, and then ask you to Western Union or Money Gram them about 1/3 of the check to solidify the shipping, doc fees and or taxes.

So, some folks say wow... that's great... I get more than I wanted, plus I don't have to drop the item off to a shipping company! They run to their local bank... who cashes the very authentic looking, yet very fake and worthless check the "buyer" has mailed you... and then they rush out to the Western Union terminal to forward the "buyer" the money requested to complete the transaction. The "buyer" never sends anyone to pick up his item. Why? This is why...

In about 10 days, the seller gets a call from his bank, who says, gee we are so sorry to inform you that the check you cashed in is a fraud... so we are going to have to remove the funds from your account to cover the worthless check. DOH!

Now, the seller already hit Western Union 11 days before and sent the money as directed to his "buyer". The seller scrambles to the local police and makes the report... the local police trace the Western Union to where? NIGERIA.

Across the pond folks. The money often is used to buy weapons used to fight our troops overseas!

The local PD calls the FBI or the Secret Service since it's a money scam and the FEDs say... Oh, we're sorry... we can't go overseas to recoup your loss... in fact, all we have is the pick up number used by the perp when they gathered up 1/3 of their free loot. Sad, but very true.

These clowns send 1000's of emails a day... from internet pc's abroad... and if they score just 10 a day, say for between 100 and 500 dollars a pop, (normally more like a grand), they would be making quite a bit more than the average American worker now wouldn't they?

    Frustrating to say the least.

There are spin offs of this scam... variants as the masses learn what to look for.

Another one to watch is the secret shopper. Coming to a email inbox or local post office near you!

I hate sh*tbags... I really do. So much so that I don't wave.

The old "Mystery Shopper" scam! My co-worker got this one earlier this month. They provided a voicemail type number and they call you back. They tell you that you have been "Selected" as the secret shopper and enclose a fraudulent check (this check will usually reflect some other type of business not associated with their fake business......for example the check they sent was from an apartment complex in Atlanta, GA) with some instructions to deposit the check in your bank account. Part of the funds are used to buy useless items that you can keep or a meal at McDonalds. They request that you visit Walmart's Western Union and send them a $3000 money gram and to rate their service. If everything goes well, you be "Selected" again and will be paid a monthly salary.

Usually there are "Red Flags" all over these scams.

    1. The business they represent is "Fake".
    2. Checks they use are fraudulent and are not drafted from their business.
    3. They want you to deposit the check and immediately send them a wire (Western Union, money gram, etc.) usually a couple thousand dollars.
    4. Willing to pay a nice Salary.....for doing almost nothing. Cmon.
    5. Provide a phone number that goes directly to voicemail so you can provide a call back number.

These people need to be found and sent to Gitmo!

I did something like this to a guy that stole my dad's credit card number. I can't remember how we got his address but we did. It was some jerk-wad in NJ. Anyway, I went to WalMart and pulled the inserts out of every single magazine in the isle and signed him/her up for all of them.

First, they got flooded w/ tons of magazines (from Vogue to Women's Health to Southern Living to Maxim), then they got flooded w/ the bills for those magazines.

Moral: Don't steal, or you'll end up running into a jacka** like me.

    I'd send her an update:
My buddy, Hugh Jass, made a suggestion that we take a trip to Colorado for a ski trip and while we're out there, we could just show up, pick up the truck. He saw you had a jeep for sale as well so we could do two transactions at once. We'll pay cash. Works for everyone. We'll meet at your local Marriott. If we're not in our rooms, we'll leave a message with the clerk. Ask the clerk if he's seen Mike Hawk and Hugh Jass. We're probably in the bar.
