Just tried this exact size on my 17 TRD sport on the stock rims with 2" of lift and they definitely hit the control arms. I'm probably gonna need 1" spacers or I may go smaller tires. Wish I woulda read this post earlier!

If you get 4.75 back spacing it will do the trick so you will clear your UCA. 17x8.5, 6x5.5 Bolt Pattern, 4.75" Backspace, 0mm Offset. You should clear with a 2" lift.
I went 2 1/2 because I 4x. If you you 4x I would recommend at least a 2 1/2 lift and a BMC if you are going 285/70/17 in the tire size.

you will need to look up the wheel you currently have on Toyota's website somewhere if your are keeping those wheels. If you are you will need a spacer.
If you are not make sure your new wheels have a 4.45 back space

So on Gen 3s, I can run 285s with a 2” lift so long as the wheel is anything over 17x8 ?

I’m about to pull the trigger on a 5100s bilstein set up front and back to level it out with 265/70/17s on some method NV wheels. But much rather go for 285s if it’s not gonnna be an issue.

Thanx in advance for any help.

Go with 2 1/2 and you will be good to go with 285's but consider the BMC also.
To be safe. 2 should be ok but 2 1/2 there is no doubt.

BMC? I apologize in advance, but I'm not keen on the appropriate nomenclature of TacomaWorld lol.
Also, would I need to replace the upper control arms with the 2.5" lift?

No worries, BMC, would be a Body Mount Chop, there is a section behind the front wheels that is taken out so the bigger tire does not hit when turning. https://youtu.be/0v2h6pBzIrs
You will only need to replace the UCA's if you lift 3" or above.

New on here and still haven't really found the answer. But can you fit a 285/70r17 on just a 2in front lift on a 3rd gen?

Paul, you're good on height just not width. If you're using the stock wheels then you'll need to add wheel spacers..probably 1" thick.

Lift has nothing to do with being able to fit a certain size tire. If it doesn't fit stock it won't fit lifted. All lifting does is change the static position of the suspension in it's arc, but the travel arc remains the same.

Wheel backspacing, fender/bmc clearance and alignment are what really dictate the tire size you can run without rubbing.

Hi Paul, I couldn't say on a 3rd Gen. Although t here are other factors that you would need to think about like Seth mentioned. Are you going to put on different wheels? (backspacing)? I would say a 2 1/2 would be best with a body mount chop and if you are going to put wheels on something with these measurements would work:
    17x8.5", 6x5.5 Bolt Pattern, 4.75" Backspace, 0mm Offset
It should function nice for you.

If you’re driving street you won’t have running issues, same with 285/75/16 but at full compression turned you are going to rub. Flex it out and you’ll see

I have stock rims and run 285/75/16. My problem was never rubbing, it was hitting the UCA. I bought it used with Nitto trail grabblers (285/75/16). I could only turn my steering wheel one turn before it would hit the UCA. Now I have BFG KO2s (same size) and I can turn almost to lock (about a 1/4 turn from being locked). The KO2s are thinner at the tread of the tire than the Nittos were.

Im in somewhat of a similar scenario. I want to go to 18" wheels. Can I get 70 on my sidewall? I want to do a 2" lift.
My ideal tire size would be 275/70/18
275 because its a bit wider but may be able to avoid any hassle some people are experiencing with 285
70 because it gets me more sidewall
18 because i love the look

Nice looking truck! What psi do you run with those tires? I have the same ones/same size. Just curious
