Understood. Yes I’m aware of skinny tire advantages in theory at least. On tire size, I looked at 265 and 275 but you won’t find a 34 in either as the aspect ratio doesn’t get high enough to get beyond like 33.3” — I’ll probably settle on 285/70/18 Toyo open country AT3 at 57lb .. lightest tire in that size that’s decent I can find

EDIT: more options in 17” wheels

Nitto Ridge Grapplers — true 34 and weight is tolerable — wonder what poke I’d get:

Not my vibe. Just looks a little bit forced.

That’s certainly true, I’ve noted that it was an issue to find something taller in that narrow width. I’ve got a local tire shop that is really good and will likely be able to find me something that isn’t as wide and keep the weight down, but the options are certainly more limited.

FWIW, I’ve owned 3 sets of nittos, the company I work for runs them on about a 3rd of our trucks, and know lots of friends with them, and they always seem to wear prematurely compared to other brands. They’ve also been harder to balance or more easily out of balance/cupped (though again, maybe this is better now). The actual performance of the new tires though is really excellent

That's what I've been reading about the Nittos - how long do you think they last / are quiet?

I’d say I was satisfied with the tire performance/wear/noise to about 50-60% of their rated tread-life. Compare that to other tires reasonable to about 25-30% tread life remaining.

I suppose I’ve had 4 sets, Terra Graps, Trail Graps, and two sets of exo grapplers. The trail grapplers are the more modest MT but are quite noisy. I think you said you have a family in the truck sometimes. I’d recommend against something that aggressive (They’re very nice off highway though in multiple terrain types, and gravel). Terra are nice and quiet, smooth, but nothing exceptional. But poorest tread wear. Exo grapplers out of balance/cupping but really nice AT tire overall, can be studded as well. I used a studded version as my winter rubber on a half ton truck and was very pleased, but they wore fast in the summer, and have a 3/4 ton with them on right now but they are cupped to hell.

I used to run Falken AT3W. A bit stiff but overall a great tire. The AT4s are just so insanely heavy. Have you ever run KO2s or Toyo open country at3?

I haven’t tried the Falken AT3W but I had the AT4W new ones on my last 3rd gen Tacoma and they were really nice. I also had the Toyo AT3’s on the same truck (I think we talked about these before). They were skinnies. They are nice tires, the Toyos, but they are slightly louder than the AT4. But a better mild highway tire. If you’re more on road I’d go for the Toyo, but a bit more off I’d lean toward the AT4, perhaps. Both are capable tires and winter-rated.

I’ve had BFG KO2s MTs on a pathfinder and they were quite fun, but only the KO2 ATs on fleet vehicles. I dont like the KO2 ATs personally. They have good tread life but it’s because they are hard. I find that they tend to chip a lot and look shitty when they get old. I can’t comment closely enough on their noise level… nothing remarkable about off road performance of the ATs, but the MTs perform fairly well in my experience.

Interesting - did you find the toyos to be shitty on wet roads ? That’s what I hear from some. Also some say they are loud (in E load).

Ok. Did a mellow rocky trail with the tires. And at full turn - hitting any bumps rubbed. Had to remove the front safety plate for clearance. Worked great after.

Thank you for the update! My plan is to get 285/70/18 KO3s — these will measure 33.7” x 11.5” versus your 34.3” x 11.8” — given what you know do you think I’ll avoid rubbing ?

I purchased Nitto Ridge Grappers in 285x70x18. I love the Ridge Grappers, had them on my 21 pro in size 285x75x16. These tires wore evenly and noise is tolerable. I don't want to lift my new pro so I went with 34"x11.50. On my 21 I installed a westcott lift. The newer pro is around the same height as my 21 after the lift was installed. I figure people are running 285x70x17 on stock tacoma. My size is 1" more ,but the pro is also higher from factory. Hoping no rubbing. I will post pics later they don't get installed until Sunday 10/27/24.

Today I had my Nitto ridge Grappers 285x70x18 installed. There is no rubbing what so ever. There is still so much clearance the tires look factory. I kept the factory mud flaps on. I will change out flaps in time because they only cover 1/2 the original tire. Now more tire exposed. The didn't modify the mud flap to the extra wide pro fenders and they look crappy.

Buddy how is that fitting so well? I saw a 285/70/18 KO3 on a TH and it was a close fit. Same lift as the PRO. Also — I think your tires are indeed a “true 34” versus the KO3’s being 33.7” — confusing! I’m interested in your tires because I think they are only 61lb. How does it drive? Noise level, vibration, power loss, MPG, etc?

I have only driven it from tire shop to my home 10 miles or so. I Also thought there was a lot of clearance still left after install. I will post more information later about MPG ride comfort. My truck only had 440 miles before putting on other tires. I was getting 20 mpg on stock tires. this was 250 miles doing around 75 to 78 on PA Turnpike . Here is the tire spec from nittotire.com.

Agreed. 33s long small on the truck. Let me know what you decide to go with. I have the Pro and thinking about putting 35s. I'm open to 34s too. Thx

I been busy lately so haven't taken a long trip . Back and forth to supermarket and other place close by I am getting 20 mph on trucks odometer which is now off a bit by the bigger tire. It seems to be the same as prior to changing tires. I love the way the look and ride.
