Going to install some 285/70r17 nitto ridge grapplers on a 3.5” lift kit on a 2006 Tacoma sr5. Does anyone know if I’ll have any serious rubbing issues and if I do, how much cutting do I have to do? And just a side question, what’s a CMC? Been reading a couple of people saying it and got no clue.

CMC is a cab mount chop and if you cycle the suspension you're going to need to do it. A lift doesn't change the size of the wheel well.

3.5 inch suspension lift will cause your cv boot fins to rub, wear, and tear. Is it a db lift? Consider a lower lift like 2.5 inches. CMC is cutting part of the wheel well back to increase tire clearance

    Too much
If you do no mod like cab chop, you will rub. Amount of lift won’t matter really. 265 with a 0 offset if you don’t want much poke

    That'd a third gen he has a 2nd gen.

If you wheel the truck at all he's going to rub no matter what. Just cut what needs ot be cut its not that bad.

The frames are basically the same 2nd gen or 3rd gen. 285s can fit without cutting of the cab mounts. Just need move the tire forward.

^1. He's correct, I have the same size, 285/70/17 and after alignment it doesn't rub unless I hit something fairly hard with the wheel full tilt. Minor plastic trimming worked for me. I also beat down the pinch weld for extra credit.

the frames might be the same (not sure on that) but it seems like the 3rd gen folks have better luck running 285 tires then 2nd gen folks. the 2nd gen folks have to do more chopping and cutting.

With the wheel straight I rub the top of the fender flare when stuffed. When the wheel is turned and stuffed I rub fender liner a bit at the back of the wheel well and catch upper corner of the bumper cover in the front of the wheel well. No way it would fit without a CMC. This is with +3 caster on the alignment. I'm running SPC UCAs and 16x8 4.5 bs/0 offset wheels.

You need to set your SPC to setting “F” or “G” and that will move your tire away from your cab mount. Then set your Caster and Camber. Check the other post it shows that my tire has about 1” of clearance from the Cab mount while turning.
I added spacers for the bump stop to prevent the tire from hitting the top of the fenders at full stuff. The Bump stop spacers that come with the Bilstein 5100 may or may not be enough? You need to check because every set up is different.

Your offset and wheel width makes a huge difference.
I was running 285/70R17 on 17X9" ProComp wheels with 4.75" BS.

EDIT: I rub my cab mounts now because I added 1.25" wheel spacers to my wheels. But only while turning and hitting bumps. (Hunting season is over so I don't wheel the truck) I'll remove the spacers when the season starts again.

The control arms are properly set. If I move the wheel any further forward it'll likely rip the bumper cover off since it rub there too when stuffed. Taller bump stops would work but what's the point of running an extended travel coilover if I'm just going to limit wheel travel with a bumpstop spacer.

I'm fairly confident that if any 2nd Gen Tacoma owner with just a suspension lift that claim they don't rub on 285s without a cab mount chop gave me their keys for 5 minutes I could prove them wrong.

"Properly set"?? Can be anything from setting A-G with SPC's. They are designed to do a wide range of things, depending on what you want to set it up for?
Unless you specifically set it up to clear your Cab mounts?
I'm sure given 5 minutes in a completely stock truck and I can make it rub!

I wheel my truck fairly hard. Not as hard a some hardcore people but it is definitely not a "street queen" (I don't launch it off jumps)
I wheel my truck hard enough that I have already worn out my cab isolators with only 5K miles on the truck. (Replaced them with Poly isolators)
Never rubbed on the Cab mount with my 285's.
I can do the CMC (I've done it many times before) But I see no reason to cut up a perfectly good truck when it isn't necessary. Maybe when I go to 35" tires?
For normal offroading and daily driving I have Zero rub. 285 fit with minor trimming of plastic up front. (If you do the viper cut or get a high clearance bumper even better)

If I decide to keep these 1.25" wheel spacers on for next hunting season I might do the pinch weld and CMC.

Glad you don't rub (much) @toku58 but you have a 3rd Gen. The fender and front bumper are different.

If I increase caster any more the tire will remove the front bumper cover whether I want to or not. A viper cut is fine if you're rubbing the bottom of the bumper cover but I catch it at the top where it meets the fender. You can see where it has been deformed from getting caught by a tire lug.

    E51851A3-6F13-4419-8D02-88463DF920A8.jpg

Also, wouldn't setting the SPC at F or G reduce caster and move the tire toward the cab mount?
