285/75R17 Perfect Size on 3rd Gen

New question for those that did CMC, Pinchweld mod, and trimming front fender liners.

And then decided to go up to 35’s from the 34’s (285/75/17 tires 33.9”) is there enough room to do that (fit a 35x10.5x17 @34.5”).

I have the CMC cover plates in hand and shop to perform CMC and Pinchweld lined up.

Struck on what tire to purchase

I think I narrowed down to these 285/75/17 size tires.

Toyo Open Country ATIII but don’t care for less aggressive sidewalls. But like threads more open patterned for Offroad use.

Nitto Terra Grapllers G3’s but don’t like the tighter thread pattern when taking Offroad in muddy situations.

Cooper Strongholds like open pattern but reading reviews where noises is a factor or more so and wet traction may lack to other two.

Edit: I was mistaken the tire size is actually a 255/85/17 34.6” x 9.8”) and largest rim recommended is 8”. I’m on 8.5” so these are not a great fit. I want the MT Boss AT but they don’t make a 285/75/17 size. The closest is the 35/10.5/17 at 34.5.

It’s comparable in weight and may be easier to get good clearance next to Upper Control Arms but it Height may be a clearance factor?

And my thinking is with the 10.5 thread the rolling resistance is less and “may” have better impact on mileage.

Thoughts on these musings of mine, recommendations please.

 

Enjoy my 285/75/17 and will probably be the size I run for the life of the truck.

 

I was in a similar situation and took months to figure out what tire to purchase. I ended up with Toyo AT3 285/75r17 in C load. After running E load tires switching to C has been really nice. I had concerns about the less aggressive sidewall on the Toyos, especially coming from a mud tire, but I am happy with how they look and very happy with how they handle and how quiet they are. Toyo AT3 also comes in 35x11.5r17 C load (34.5"x11.5") if you want a slightly taller tire.

Since you are open to 255/85r17, have you considered the Kenda RT in 35x11r17? Manufacturer says an 8.5" width wheel is okay, and it is roughly the same dimensions as the 255/85r17 Baja Boss AT. Tons of photos in this thread

I was considering the Stronghold AT for awhile due to how light it is, but it only has 2 ply sidewall and reviews so far say they are noisy from the get go.

Falken has C load offerings in this size but the weight of the AT4W & RT are concerning. With stock gears I was looking for the lightest wheel & tire setup possible.

 

@th3clara i think we’re on the same page here. My consideration for the Coopers is the weight savings but have “heard” noise was a concern. I’m deaf as it is and me and the bride fight due to each others having to holler to communicate

So don’t want to add much more weight than this size already has.

The Toyo AT III sidewalls are the only thing holding me back on them.

I’m a tuner (MCB Autotech tunes) and have it on my truck and I know it will do fine with the extra weight. Plus I can adjust shift points for additional tire dimensions to fine tune it. So that will help.

I’ll take a look at the Kenda RT’s

Would like to see it on a Taco for comparison if you don’t mind?
