Getting tired of seeing all the “will 285 tires fit” questions almost everyday. Can we put an end to this?

The not so simple answer is yes, they will fit with no rubbing on road or off (no CMC needed!). You just need to choose the right lift, tire, wheel, and get a proper alignment. If you have 8” wide wheels and have a zero or negative offset are they going to fit without rubbing? No, they probably won’t. Been down that road with our Pro Taco. Ended up having to do a CMC to be able to do the off roading we typically do. Didn’t want to go that route with this rig so did some research and picked a wheel and tire I knew would avoid having to do a thing to make them work.

Pictures show a 285/75/16 Cooper XLT tire on a 2020 Pro rim (7” wide with a 13mm offset) with a 2.5” lift. Have over an inch of clearance in all directions. And don’t forget about a 33/10.5 tire if you want to run a 33” tire but don’t need the extra inch of width a 285 tire gives you. Could give you the ability to use a wheel with closer to a zero offset. The Kenda Klever RT is a great option in this size. Last picture is a side by side comparison of a 16” Pro rim with a 285/75 tire and a 17” Pro rim with a 33/10.5 tire.

So you can easily run a 285 tire without having to alter anything if you pick and choose the right tire and wheel. Agreed, no rub here either. 285/70R17 Nitto Trail Grapplers with a modest 2” Toytec lift.7A293A21-4D80-4BD2-8DFC-69BD8B86AE11.jpg

Lift has nothing to do with it. (Unless you mean shitty lift that restricts travel). The extent of the up and down wheel travel does not change with a lift, all that changes is where the wheel rests within that same travel. So if it hits without a lift, it’ll hit with a lift (it’ll just hit less often).

Sorry, but a lift that is used on the road will help clear larger wheels and tires. Its only when you take it off road and compress the travel does a lift not help with clearance. Most people don’t wheel their rigs so a lift WILL help with a lot of clearance issues for a lot of people and also help get them the look they are after.

Your statement is going to confuse a lot of people like the ones who always say a 285 won’t fit without rubbing. The people who actual wheel know what a lift will or won’t do. But for the people who have to ask if a 285 tire will fit, then yes, a lift is one of several areas that will help in their quest to fit a larger tire.

definitely NOT the end of discussion. people are still going to ask this anyways.

not everyone is going to have the same lift, wheel, tire, etc as OP.

There's soooo many mix and matches with all those variables, that this discussion will NEVER die

Bottom line... you have to clear with no lift in order to clear with lift. No confusion there. It's logic.

My main point is that a 285 can fit without doing a CMC or any modifications. Yes, people will ask but it would be nice to have people only respond that know what their talking about and not just speaking from their own experience with whatever combination of wheels and tires that they used. The width of a wheel and the offset plays the most important roll in fitting a 285 tire. But countless members just say it won’t fit without a CMC or major trimming just because that is what they experienced with their choice of wheels and tires.

    Yeah we all know .

It may be a minor annoyance but it’s just better to look the other way . Because the other side of the coin is 100 threads telling us how someone bought 285’s and they fit.

A lift is never required, you just have to be willing to cut...

    No, but have fun trying.

That should be obvious to anyone that knows anything about wheeling. But you can use a lift to clear larger wheels and tires if your just using your rig as a mall queen. No confusion there.

Obviously you don’t read the forum much. This is almost a daily question. If you all know then why are you asking all the time?
