I bought a 2004 Dbl cab, new, and have pampered it all these years. I bought a new truck this year, so the 2004 is being equipped for more in off road.
About a month after purchasing my 04, I installed a spacer lift, and add-a-leaf for better stance and hauling ability. I ran 265/70R16's exclusively.
To get the truck started in the off road scene, I purchased a set of 2020 stock off road wheels. I still need one for the spare (for looks only).
I then purchased a set of Falken Wildpeak 235/85R16's from Discount Tires Direct. (I also decided after they arrived I need another) Then I purchased another for the spare.
The tires are great. No complaints in the ride. The size of tire fills the wheel wells, with no rubbing lock to lock.
The Sway Bar, I think I'm going to remove, for I've read it gives the suspension more freedom for articulation.
I'm green, and new to the scene of off road. I research heavily, while trying to learn, but I don't want to get pulled into unnecessary modifications that exceed "my" way of having a bit of fun.
The wheels and tires I chose, they fit perfectly IMO. After running around for a while, I thought about adding a set of 1" wheel spacers. I've read a lot of mixed reviews and concerns regarding wear.
As referenced here, installing the spacers, hub-centric, quality made, with quality bolts are a must. I think I'll try them.

    Great thread.

On another note. The swapping to the 235/85R16's, the speedometer is almost dead-on accurate MPH, compared to my GPS. I'm stumped how that can be.

If you are going to use spacers make sure to get the proper lug nuts. You really want to get the extended type lugnuts to be safe.

Roger that. I'm set, if I decide to try them.

    A crap ton of mods.
The 4runner limited wheels have a 4.5" backspace vs the stock 5.25 so they move the tire exactly 3/4" away from the frame. @Crom also used these wheels in his well-thought-out overlander build and I learned about them in his thread, so credit where it's due!

Yeah it really just comes down to what you use your truck for. On my rock crawler I run 15 inch rims because I want lots of side wall and get a bigger tire print without having to go down so much in pressure. If you're running your truck primarily on the street going with a big rim and lower profile tire is obviously a better option. My Tacoma is an offroad model and I use it that way quite a bit so the 16 was a nice compromise so the rims don't get scrubbed on the rocks as much as a 17" would.
