Only way you're getting anything over 24MPG on a Taco is if you're getting hauled by a tow truck...

I can *almost* squeeze 29 out of my '14 RAV in flat Florida if I run about 5 under the limit.

Even early to mid 90's Accords can easily get over 25.

    A Tacoma at 29?

Dont know what to say here. Although I was surprised to see it myself. But my 2018 SR5 V6 stock toyo tires (34,000 miles) routinely achieves 28 Hwy. Many times 30 to 31 if I drive easy (60-65). City tank fuel economy about 23-24. I drive 3 miles one way to work and get 22 -23 summer, maybe 19 winter. I live in Ohio. I tow a Starcraft camper, fairly small (3200 lbs) and I get about 18 while doing so. Again I'm not going 80. Usually keep it under 70. I have no tonneau cover though I would like one. I hear this helps even more. I thought the computer was lying to me so I checked the old fashioned way by filling up and dividing. I found the computer was actually cheating me by .5 to 1 mpg. I suppose I'm being towed by an invisible tow truck.

i want to believe you but i also want to at least see a picture of 30mpg on the daahboard. even with that picture i doubt it cause i get 30mpg only because the way back to my house from the gas station is crazy downhill steep hills and the computer only has those high numbers to average with. my 2.7L can only get up to 27-26mpg when i go around 50 on completely flat roads with no stops and im on worn out ko2's. also my 2.7 is very light, around 4450 pounds from going to the scrap yard couple days ago. i just find it hard to believe the 30mpg statements, is it possible yes but only in completely favorable situations.

Look at how many millions of miles have been tracked using Fuelly. I'd rather go with aggregated real world data than a single data point bozo on facebook. :) You might be able to get it to spit out 29 mpg for a 20 mile stretch somehow. Doesn't mean it will be sustainable and realistic long term.

Your new tires are 20mm narrower, same height and 3.5 lbs is nothing. My truck came with P265/70/16's that weighed 38 lbs each. In the 16 years I've owned it I've had P245/75/16's, P265/75/16 and E rated LT265/75/16's that weighed 53 lbs each. My fuel mileage has never changed. I'm pretty consistent at 16-17 for normal every day driving and 19-20 mpg on the road. That's because they were all relatively narrow, moderately aggressive all terrain tires.

There was a slight loss of acceleration with the heavier tires. It does take more power to get them moving. But once up to speed it doesn't take any more power or fuel to keep them moving. 285 series or wider tires with aggressive tread have much more rolling resistance. That is what kills fuel mileage. You can't coast very far. You have to keep your foot on the accelerator to keep moving. Those tires tend to be heavier, but it isn't the weight that is causing the problem.

My best tank of fuel came with the slightly oversize P265/75/16's. We were in northern AZ and southern Utah on mountain backroads where speeds over 55-60 weren't practical. Lots of downgrades where I could coast for miles and I got almost 23 mpg. My worst fuel mileage came the next day driving from Denver to Kansas City. It was all slightly downhill, but in a steady headwind. Only got 16 mpg. From KC back to GA there was no wind and fuel mileage went back to 20 MPG.

At most 1/2 mpg. Where people lose fuel mileage on a 4X4 is when they go to oversize tires with aggressive tread, lift the truck and overload it with heavy bumpers, winches, rock sliders, skid plates, and every other accessory they can find. If you compare stock trucks with the same tires and options, there is no measurable difference. People who modify their 4X2 trucks with lifts, big tires and every option they can find take the same fuel mileage hit.

seems doable if he changes oil every 5K and uses amsoil in the gear boxes.

I got a pretty significant mileage bump from the KDMax Pro tune, regularly get in the range of 22mpg, nowhere near the alleged 29mpg though.

I can push it to 25ish by shifting into neutral on the downgrades… makes me think the transmission has a bigger effect on mileage than I’d have thought.

I don’t think aerodynamics are as big an issue as everyone thinks. Look up the drag coefficient for this truck.

Maybe the facebook guy in post #1 was using the imperial (British) gallon to calculate his mpg. 24mpg (US gal) can turn into ~29mpg (British gal) without any problem at all.

Well, about a month ago, coming back to L.A. from the eastern Sierras we detoured from Lee Vining and came home through Yosemite and Fresno to avoid driving straight into the middle of the hurricane. 2018 DCLB OR V6 with a SnugTop shell, two people and gear on stock 265 tires at 38 psi. There was so much steady rain that the only safe speeds for most of the way were between 40 and 50 mph and the speed limit in the national park is strictly enforced at 45mph. Three major grades to climb - Tioga Pass, climbing out of Yosemite Valley and then finally up and over the Grapevine at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. We watched so many cars fly by us at 75 mph in the rain only to drive by them spun off in the ditch a few miles down the road. Bottom line is on that slow ten hour drive we hit just a tick over 28mpg, so yes, it can be done, but you have to go slow, and never use cruise control, which actually makes your mileage worse by trying to maintain the same speed going up hills.

Four years ago we drove the twenty miles from Lone Pine up to Cottonwood Meadows to get out of the heat. That one was, to the best of my recollection, about 10 mpg on the way up and about 88 mpg on the way down, which for the most part was coasting.

If you hyper-mile and on good fuel ideal conditions / tires maybe 27 - 28. We are talking 60 mph behind a semi.

Recent back to back analysis I did of 55 - 65 vs 75 - 85 MPH with rolling hills.
