Speaking of fuel economy... assume cruising on flat ground in a MT:
    - Is it more economical to be in 6th gear at 50mph or a lower gear?
    -Lower RPMs the better?

Essentially, how to maximize fuel economy with a manual transmission.

255/85R16's, overinflated, driving at 60mph in top gear in a 6mt, cruise control on flat ground, I could manage 23-25. Add a little down slope and 30 would be easy.

29 around town is damned near impossible unless he's testing some secret squirrel hybrid.

    If u have a scooop you'll get 12. If not, 27. It's pretty simple.

It's weird but you save more gas coasting down in drive as long as the transmission is keeping the engine over some 1500 rpm fuel is shut off, at idle you still need some fuel.

LOL dang I fell for another 2 year old thread =)

I use trip meter A for overall mileage until next fuel up.

Trip meter B is for overall single trek...like this weekend we went from Dover, DE to Glenn Mills, PA...over all 120+ miles for the day. (1/4 gas used)

Back to the overall mileage between fill ups...I get close to 400 miles per tankful (400 miles/22 tank size = 18.1818)

I use unleaded 87 octane gas and can sometimes drive like a grandad.

I'm ok with the average mileage I get...it was similar to the 2003 Honda Pilot I had that also had a V6/3.5 but a 19 gallon tank.

Fuelly indicates otherwise. My 2.7 used to get me around 21-22mpg with a 50/50 mix city/highway but lately it's 0.9 mile stints to nowhere so I'm getting 19 as the 2.7 is cold blooded and needs to warm up. Long trips I'm always around 23-24 at 70mph. If you use the Fuelly numbers it's about 2 mpg more which isn't much but it does mean I get around 400+ miles out of a tank of gas.

One thing Fuelly doesn't do a great job at doing is showcasing the types of uses these readings are for. For example: the 4-cylinder is rated better in the city and worse on the highway than the V6. I suspect those with the 4-cylinder are also using theirs less on the highway at 70+ mph.

Still trying to navigate how to post photos. I'm kinda new to this sort of thing. Anyhow, above was driving down I-75 in Ohio. Pretty flat doing between 65-70

How do I make sure to buy your V6 Taco??? I swear when I was researching most guys on tacomaworld were complaining about high teens on mpg. but a few guys like you somehow get a unicorn that does 30mpg which I can't get out of the 2.7. High 20s is best I can do at 60-65 on the highway which is darn slow.

I think next time I need to test drive several of the same car, drive them all down the highway at 75mph and record mpg then choose the ringer.

With your engine/driving skill you must easily get 400+ miles out of a full tank of gas don't you?

I solved my MPG woes by turning that screen off on the dash so it’s blank when I’m driving. When I turn off the truck and it flashes trip MPG, I look away, problem solved!

I also don’t look at how much each tank costs, because that’s how much each tank costs. I look at the aggregate from time to time, but not too often as it’s pretty consistent and within my overall expectations.

I’ve always understood that it’s functionality that drives the Tacoma, not MPGs, none of my Toyota trucks have even gotten good gas mileage so I guess my expectations are low.
